about all the southern whites who vote for Republicans is that it was the New Deal that brought electricity to the region, that focused on education to bring people out of poverty, that offered a G.I. bill to help pay for that education....

so, in one generation, the south built a strong middle class (and this legislation helped African-Americans as well, but whites were still privileged) in what had been one of the most feudal areas of the nation.

and the politicians they vote for are trying to bring this feudalism back.
