"Give them $20 a week, teach them to manage it." - said to my sister who has Asian children

Last edited Sun Jul 7, 2013, 04:59 PM - Edit history (1)

That's the advice my sister's father in law had in attending to their children. Give them $20 a week, let that pay for food medical care and everything else. They will learn to manage it.

Let's let that sink in for a second - a 9 year old and a 12 year old will learn to MANAGE THEIR money and if they get sick, will have a padded out account to take care of themselves. THAT will teach them responsibility.

It goes without saying that he's a fundie nutjob but just the presence of an asshole like this in the life of my nieces makes me want to puke. "Give them $20 and let them fend for themselves". Holy fuck. My nieces are also adopted from China, so, no racism there.

The father-in-law was suggesting that the children learn to manage their own health care "allowances" food and recreation. Meanwhile, the father-in-law has been on disability for his "back" which seems supple enough when he bends down to take pictures.

Fundie assholes in my own family.

because the kids will soon learn that blowing it on junky toys, candy bars and sodas gets pretty unsatisfying after a while and they'll learn to save for things they really want.

However, Daddyrabbit might need to be educated to the fact that he owes them basic health care and will be thrown into the clink if they get sick and he doesn't provide it.

That's the approach we've taken with our kids. They have to save up to buy (most) of their "fun" things. Saying they should have to pay for necessities, though, is crazy.

children about getting thrown into the clink if they can't provide medical care means for themselves. That's a highlight of a first world country.

24/7, has been on disability for 20 years, and thinks that God will provide for those poor, poor children that my sister and her husband saw fit to take in from that awful country. I'm guessing he thinks they are charity cases instead of their CHILDREN that they have been raising for the last ten years.

It's some sort of weird idea that they should earn their place because they are here on the good graces of the people (my sister and her husband - which are both fundies, too, but not nearly that bad) that saved them and they should learn immediately how to be good citizens that act like Libertarian Baptists that need to stay in their places because despite the fact that they are children, are Asian.

My father in law lives in BReligionFE. My Brother in Law came from there. Expecting Ernest (the FIL) to know anything beyond the Christian channel and how to get to the mailbox for his disability check so he can go to church to pray and eat dinner is like asking a parasite if they are aware that they are a drain. They will reply that they are on a Godly mission.

$20/week isn't. that's $1040 a year. would probably pay for one office visit a month.

and that is what upset me. I love my nieces. My mother and I went through the store buying things they like to make their visit not only tolerable, but fun. I love them. My mother loves them. I don't see how anyone can be callous and awful toward them because they are brilliant, smart girls that will grow into brilliant smart women.

is upsetting to me, because we don't treat people like that, and we don't treat family members like that. I'm trying to keep a level head. It's difficult. These are family members.
