Edward Snowden: 'The US government will say I aided our enemies' – video interview

In the second part of an exclusive interview with Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras, former NSA contractor Edward Snowden contemplates the reaction from the US government to his revelations of top-secret documents regarding its spying operations on domestic and foreign internet traffic, email and phone use. This interview was recorded in Hong Kong on 6 June 2013

Look at it this way. DUers consider themselves high-information politically-savvy folk, by and large.

Yet a large number of DUers are people surprised by a lot of the information that Snowden put out and additional information that's come to light. Even though this really isn't new information by any stretch of the imagination. Metadata collection? Check. FISA? Check. NSA? Check. The only thing that's really new is that it's continued. The rest of the new stuff is marginal, around the edges.

There's a lot of information to keep in mind. And even with knowledge of the information, it may not be salient or you may not realize the importance and application. You may know the information or may have heard it, but it slips.

More than once somebody on DU's said, "If this was going on under *, why didn't the newspaper pick up on it--because if they did, I'd have heard." Then I've gone, tracked down the appropriate threads from DU2, and linked to them--and have never been surprised to find that the DUer expressing surprise at something had posted to at least several of the threads. Did he know about them? Sure--he was arguing about them at the time. But a few years later the memories are buried to the point that he says he's never heard of the stories. No "d'uh" is appropriate here because we pretty much all have done it concerning something at some time.

There's no one homogeneous set of "enemies". Our "enemies" are all sorts. Some are newbies and missed all the info the first time around because they were 10. Some are old hands and didn't notice the info because they were in a cave, so to speak. Others will have forgotten. Some would simply fail to understand that the phone call from France to Thailand probably goes through the US, as might email from Britain to Nigeria. They may miss interconnections and implications because of inattention or lack of savvy at the time. Many will assume that since the info is old and technology keeps changing the information is dated. Or that the NSA might be able to collect data but certainly couldn't collect it *all*. And, finally, given that it was decried as Bush II's program and so many people argued for it to be shut down, it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that it had been shut down under Bush II or that Obama, surely, wouldn't have continued it.

And, most shockingly, some of our "enemies" are actually enemies. Without the scare quotes. Unless you'd like to hold Djokan Tsarnaev's backpack while he goes to make a quick phone call.

Snowden Is Using 'Specific' Evidence of the U.S. Hacking China to Stay Out of Jail

Edward Snowden, the NSA leaker who has turned the United States intelligence apparatus upside-down, said that he won't be extradited back home without a fight. That fight won't take him to Britain in the meantime, but it does apparently involve letting the Chinese government know that he has information on the United States "using technical exploits to gain unauthorised access to civilian machines" in China. We knew from Snowden's interview this week with The South China Morning Post that he had new information about the U.S. hacking China, but Hong Kong's English-language newspaper reports today that he's got targets, too:

A MONTH OLD interview!

guardian/greenwald really are milking this

Oh, and this fucking guy , Like I said, a hero in his own mind---

"I joined the intelligence community when I was very young"

"The NSA collects ALL information that transits the United States"

I wish they would let me have this guy for a day, and a video camera so I can make a mock documentary. Watch Snowden attempt to use wireshark. Watch Snowden try to figure out multi-mode from single-mode. Watch Snowden figure out what EOL means. Watch Snowden attempt to mount a 16RU server!
