General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSeveral of us would like to start a new group entitled perhaps "World News Forum"
or "World Press Discussion."
If you have an idea for a better name, please suggest it.
To do this, Skinner advised me that we need to sign up 10 star members. (Have to have stars.)
I have a couple of volunteers already.
The idea of the group would be to get good translations of news and opinion pieces in foreign-language newspapers from around the world and publish them here so that we on DU can get a broader scope of information.
Any Canadians or British, Scottish or Indian or Irish or South Africans on board?
And then how about people who speak and can translate from foreign languages. I have the help of a native German speaker, and I can translate French although I am not a native speaker.
We need Spanish, Turkish, Italian, Portuguese, Scandinavian languages, Dutch, Russian, Hungarian, etc. You get the idea.
Some news from African countries would be great. And then there are China and Mongolia, Japan and Viet Nam, Korea, Thailand, Indonesia.
Let's try to get news from around the world.
Please e-mail me here at DU if you are interested and then as soon as I have the names of ten star members, I will contact Skinner.
I really think this would be interesting, educational and fun.

(7,804 posts)An idea whose time has come. All media everywhere has an agenda, and only through comparison of differing sources can useful information be gleaned. Papers have particular lines they need to follow to appeal to their readership , which is always heavily predefined and sometimes perspectives that wouldn't even have occured to "one paper" loyalists can be highly enlightening.
I support this wholeheartedly.
JDPriestly
(57,936 posts)Scottish newspapers would be a great source.

For anyone who wants a good RSS feed for world news in the meantime, I can recommend the BBC World news one: http://feeds.bbci.co.uk/news/world/rss.xml

(57,936 posts)There was a time in my life when I was very isolated and had, most of the day, no one to talk to in English. I was unable to speak the language of the country in which I lived in a relatively isolated village. The BBC kept me sane (or at least as sane as I was).
The BBC is great.

(15,480 posts)And I even got a brand new star for the occasion. I'm a regular reader of the UK Guardian; Northern Ireland's Belfast Telegraph; Edinburgh's The Scotsman; Germany's Der Spiegel International; and occasionally check in on Le Monde diplomatique; Al Jazeera and the International Herald Tribune (based in Paris since 1887, and now part of the New York Times Company - it will be renamed the International New York Times in the fall of 2013.)
Here's a link for sources of worldwide news in English.

(57,936 posts)Some newspapers have English editions. And lots of foreign newspapers are in English. This will be a place in which people can post something and ask for a summary or a translation if they can't do it themselves.
So far we have mostly European and English-language speakers. But I think that the group will grow and attract more people who know other languages.

(14,910 posts)Or would stories of international importance that would normally be included in LBN/GD instead be posted there by forum protocol?
If I would have to visit a forum outside of LBN for international news, I would be opposed to this idea ...
JDPriestly
(57,936 posts)I post from foreign sources. Often someone wants the information I got in a foreign source. It takes me a bit of effort to translate some of these posts. A special forum for foreign language sources would serve as a kind of reference library for those of us who go to the extra effort to find and translate these article.
It would be unusual but in this instance, seems to me it would not hurt to bost both in LBN or GD and in the Rorld Forum. Mostly to save translation effort.

I'm on other sites where people post Chrome translation versions to get the story up and then people familiar with the native language help tweak the translation.
Just a thought
But anyway that the forum is set up I certainly look forward to seeing this forum started!
