Virginia Poised To Enact ‘State-Sponsored Rape’ Law Forcing Women To Be Vaginally Probed Before Abortions

By Ian Millhiser on Feb 17, 2012 at 9:45 am

Earlier this month, a bill requiring women to receive an ultrasound before they can receive an abortion passed the Virginia senate, and it recently cleared a state house committee with an overwhelming majority. As Dahlia Lithwick explains, the effect of this bill would be to force most women to undergo a stunningly invasive procedure for no medical reason whatsoever. “Because the great majority of abortions occur during the first 12 weeks, that means most women will be forced to have a transvaginal procedure, in which a probe is inserted into the vagina, and then moved around until an ultrasound image is produced.”

In case Lithwick’s description doesn’t completely drive home what this means, here is a depiction of the procedure that women would be forced to endure under the Virginia bill:

Simply put, it is difficult to distinguish a law requiring women to be vaginally penetrated by a long metal object from state-sponsored rape. Worse, discussions among lawmakers leave little doubt that its supporters understood just what they were trying to write into law — they just didn’t care. As Del. C. Todd Gilbert (R) told a fellow Virginia delegate, a woman already consented to being “vaginally penetrated when they got pregnant.”

how women are treated in other religions, they should be mocked into oblivion. I'm so sick of this putrid mixture of church and state crap. Women, GOTV this election. We need to show our power AND we need to start calling women who would allow the victimization of their sisters, whether by acts of violence or by the state, on their complicity. Sisterhood does not mean that you need to allow abuse in a relationship.

every "news" segment on every channel. It should be the lead discussion on NBC CBS ABC CNN MSNBC and FOX. And it should be there for weeks until this ridiculous horrendous disgusting law is killed and memorialized.

It should be remembered forever as the penultimate example of the overreach of an overbearing State gone out of control.

This is entirely disgusting, and an unabashed attack on women....I wonder if these men would be so eager to have the govt MANDATE a prostate exam before fulfilling a viagra prescription...

Oh, and how does this differentiate from the actions of the Taliban?

If men got pregnant the freedom of choice would be in the Bill of Rights..

ANY woman, and I mean ANY woman that votes for these christo-fascists should be ashamed of themselves..

This is going all the way to the Supreme Court.
Fucking state government rape without either a woman or her doctor's approval.

I fucking dare them!! I actually wish I was 20 again.

Remember the more new crimes, the more free labor for their private prisons - aka the new slave plantations.

Virginia state dept of tourism and let them know exactly how I feel. Then I see if I can email a state department that deals with goods manufactured in the state and let them know that I will boycott all the products coming out of that state.

This law should tell reasonable people why it is never a good idea to put the Repubs in charge or control of anything! They simply are not to be trusted with any kind of power because, obviously, they don't know who to use for anything good!
