DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors says the new Chevrolet Corvette sports car will get 29 miles per gallon of gas in highway driving.
The 2014 Corvette Stingray has a 455 horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8 engine that can take the car from zero to 60 mph in under four seconds.
GM says the car can get up to 30 mpg in "Eco" mode.
The higher-mileage Corvette has a seven-speed manual transmission. It gets 17 mpg in the city.

This is my next car.

(8,377 posts)That car ought to be able to do at least high 30s on the highway.
I guess it is better than a Cadillac CTS with the 6.2L V8. That one gets 19 on the highway. Welcome to 1985. Nothing but the best technology for GM customers, I guess.

(24,853 posts)I have a CDL, Class A with a HAZMAT endorsement in the state of California and since I have a Harley-Davidson I also have a Class M endorsement.
Is that enough of a license?
Gravitycollapse
(8,155 posts)Not a state issued driver license.
cherokeeprogressive
(24,853 posts)Which is it? Are you now going to tell me you want and expect the federal government to issue licenses to drivers that determines what they can drive and what they cannot?
Can you point me to the place in The Constitution of the United States of America that gives the federal government that authority?
Gravitycollapse
(8,155 posts)Point to the place in the Constitution where that could be a law? Being that the Constitution was written well before the proliferation of internal combustion and the destruction of our environment, I'm not much concerned with whether it says anything about whether or not you can drive a car with a big ass engine.
cherokeeprogressive
(24,853 posts)You understand that, right? You understand the Constitution LIMITS what the government can do to its citizens?
Now, if you convene a Constitutional Convention and get it changed, I'm 100% in favor of however the country says it should be changed.
I'm not a fan of "the state" overstepping its authority.

(64,409 posts)This is brilliant technology. God forbid the ride is enjoyed. No, no, no...go back to buying your hateful, beige Toyota Camrolla shitboxes clogging up every single bit of asphalt in a vast bid against efficient forward progress. It's easier than thinking, after all.
455 horsepower and you don't have to plug in some anemic, hamster-wheel driven "machine" every 150 miles. A laughable affront on how far we have come.
Cheers, Chevrolet! Well done.

(8,155 posts)We've reached the point of no return with climate change. Now we can only mitigate the damage. And driving 455 horsepower sports cars around is not helping at all.

(64,409 posts)At least that car is working on improvements. You?
Gravitycollapse
(8,155 posts)Arguably since the LT1 was built but more likely since the LS1. The level of advancement in mileage since then has been minimal.
Instead of trying to make large capacity V8s fuel efficient, these companies should be working on smaller engines with forced induction.
The V8 should go the way V12s and V16s went 80+ years ago.
Want to go fast? By a motorcycle. Buy an electric car. Buy a car with a small displacement engine that has forced induction. There are plethora of options for meeting that need that don't involve cramming high displacement engines in small cars.

(64,409 posts)The Corvette in question will not only outrun my Mazdaspeed 3 in the 1/4 mile, but will also get better mpg on the highway.
Noted fail on my question.
Gravitycollapse
(8,155 posts)That Corvette would lose in the 1/4 mile to a Nissan GTR and would lose to the GTR on any circuit. And the GTR would average better mileage in real-world driving conditions.
Even then, the GTR averages shit mileage.
I've owned three different motorcycles that would easily outrun all three of the vehicles in question in a 1/4 mile and have averaged anywhere from 40 to 50 mpg.
Want a fast two seater? By a Tesla Roadster. Hell, by a Lotus Elise and you'd still obtain an average mpg far exceeding the Corvette or GTR. Sure, it may not be as fast in a straight line and it would probably lose on the circuit to a GTR. But you should be purchasing these cars to enjoy, not as cock extenders.

(24,853 posts)While it uses electricity provided by fossil fuels to recharge.
Not to mention the Corvette is probably cheaper.

(64,409 posts)I appreciate that you know a smidge about cars. Congrats on summoning the GTR. Soundly beaten by the more aptly priced ZR1 and top dog 911 Turbo, but then there's that.
A Tesla? Why? Hell, an Elise...I'd rather drop a Chevy crate motor in a Miata than deal with that. And if THOSE are your upper crust of "fast two seater" cars then shit, you've missed it all.
Gravitycollapse
(8,155 posts)I blame it on my family.
Anyway, cars like the Corvette and GTR are, 9 times out of 10, cock extenders for the man who has more money than sense and usually little or no driving skill. They just want a sports car with a big engine.
The Lotus Elise is one of the finest two seat roadsters ever made. And I brought it up because it was priced similarly to the Corvette. Unlike a ZR1 or 911 Turbo. Then we are really getting into cock extension territory.
Shoe horning a V8 into a Miata is dumb. That car is not designed to have such a heavy engine over the front wheels. Not to mention you don't need 400 or 500 HP in a car the size of a Miata.
flvegan
(64,409 posts)in regards to automobile appreciation. Yeah, you do...sorry Gravitycollapsemom and Gravitycollapsedad.
The ZR1 and 911 Turbo were brought up because, oh yeah, you mentioned the GTR. But you seem obsessed with cock extensions. I'll leave that with you and your wanna be factual statements about them.
And yes, the Elise is one of the finest two seater roadsters ever made. If you have a pit crew, bottomless finances and don't drive on anything but a track...which is odd, cuz it should have been tough to fuck up a Toyota.
Gravitycollapse
(8,155 posts)hmmmm...
Gravitycollapse
(8,155 posts)It would be odd if they managed to take a Toyota engine and fuck it up. Fortunately, they didn't.

(45,851 posts)An electric bike is actually more efficient than a human pedaling a bike, it takes considerably more energy to grow, transport, cook and consume the food to produce the energy to pedal than it does to just drive the wheels with an electric motor.

But we like doing it from time to time and that may be how we blew it all up to begin with, but as you say what's done is done. So might as well enjoy the ride.
And just for a moment of clarity - no one buys this car to get 17 city or 29 hwy or to get eggs or frankly to commute.
