n parts of California lately, it's been hot. So hot, in fact, that officials at Death Valley National Park have had to ask visitors to stop frying eggs on the ground. They're cracking down on people cracking eggs.
Temperatures are currently soaring around 120 degrees in the park (temps reached 129 degrees on June 30!), and apparently an egg-frying demonstration posted by a park employee to YouTube on June 29 backfired, spurring experiments by numerous park-goers. On July 2, park officials posted on the park's Facebook page:
An employee's posting of frying an egg in a pan in Death Valley was intended to demonstrate how hot it can get here, with the recommendation that if you do this, use a pan or tin foil and properly dispose of the contents. However, the Death Valley NP maintenance crew has been busy cleaning up eggs cracked directly on the sidewalk, including egg cartons and shells strewn across the parking lot.
This is your national park, please put trash in the garbage or recycle bins provided and don't crack eggs on the sidewalks, or the Salt Playa at Badwater. (nm)
Park spokesperson Cheryl Chipman told NBC News, "It's just one more thing to do with a short staff and hot temperatures. It's really not appreciated." What she really meant to say is, "Knock it the f*%k off, ingrates."

(55,147 posts)You could fry an egg on the sidewalk. People were dropping like flies from heat stroke (literally). That was a miserable trip. I hope people take care of themselves during the heatwave out west (I do realize though death valley is a exception to the rule).

(68,644 posts)I don't remember the heat so much, coming from NYC which is unpleasantly humid in the summer.
I distinctly remember a display with a geiger-counter and piece of orange Fiesta Ware that seemed to suggest that nuclear power was safe.
I also read that the fair was profitable, earning a net $57!

(55,147 posts)I was born &raised just 60 miles away in Middlesboro, KY. We ended up leaving the fair & going back to my hometown to go swimming in the lake that fed from the mountains.

(68,644 posts)There used to be a service that hooked up drivers with cars that needed to be driven from city to city.
This year it was a 1981 El Dorado with fully digital dash and a 4-6-8 engine (fancy).
We felt SO special driving that thing to the west coast!
Knoxville was supposed to be a highlight of the trip but we thought it was pretty "meh".
Las Vegas was more memorable. It looked a hell of a lot different then than it does now.
We stayed here at the Concha:

(10,820 posts)It would seem that the item would dry up and blow away to be eaten by whatever lives in Death Valley.
That being said, people should stop being assholes and leaving egg shells and cartons behind them. I do not take kindly to people that litter.
