We know abortion is a necessary medical service, and properly done abortions carry little risk. This is a serious question: what would stop a doctor from setting up a sterile-enough room in her spare bedroom and offering this service illegally, or establishing a clinic in a state where it's legal and setting up a transport network to make an end run around these Decrees 770?

Hard enough to find doctors these days to do legal abortions.

(11,785 posts)Don't know if such laws are on the books, but if they aren't, they will be.
That doesn't mean that some doctors won't choose to flout the law, but most will do so in secret... which makes it harder for women to find them.

And I can tell you who would out them: some middle class sanctimonious bitch who takes her 16 year old pregnant daughter for an illegal abortion. Once the mom knows that her daughter is okay, she turns in the doctor. She'll just say, "Our abortion situation was different. My daughter isn't one of those slutty girls he/she does abortions on."
I'm all for spreading word about other things, like herbs and medicines, that are abortifacients, if abortion becomes illegal in the US.
It would be a constant life looking over your shoulder for the 24/7/365 'outting' by just about ANY of the sanctimonious types.

(5,857 posts)For 1st trimester abortions the equipment required is fairly basic -- most family physicians and OB/GYN's have the needed supplies in their office already, or can order them easily. It would be easy to setup a facility in a home or otherwise (although there are other issues). Later trimester abortions require access to more complete medical facilities, so a home setup isn't likely.
The real deterrent is the doctor him/her self, and the legal issues.
