away from the authority of the city. The Charlotte airport is a valuable asset of the city. The GOP knows the city will never again elect a Republican mayor and City Council, so they targeted one of the city's most valuable assets to be controlled by their authority.
They are doing the same with valuable city-owned parkland in Raleigh, and the highly valued water system belonging to Asheville.

RALEIGH Voting largely along party lines, the N.C. House Thursday tentatively approved a bill to transfer Charlottes airport to a new authority by Jan. 1.
Final approval by the House and the Senate is expected next week.
Lawmakers say barring any last-minute concessions by the city, the bill could become law as early as Tuesday. The vote was 72-42. As a so-called local bill, it would become law without Gov. Pat McCrorys signature, even though an authority has little support in Charlotte.

(62,444 posts)Charlotte had been the main hub of USAirways, which grew by gobbling up Piedmont and other regional carriers. They became a "two hub" airline with the purchase of US West in Phoenix. But with the merger of US and American going down, there are too many "hubs" for the combined carriers. So if the new American dumps anything, it will be Charlotte.

(11,441 posts)Signs at the 7/8/13 MM protest covered voting rights, choice, water/fracking, the Dorothea Dix park, the Charlotte airport, Reinhart-Rogoff, healthcare, unemployment... the whole enchilada. WRAL and the N&O have been pretty thorough in their coverage of the Republican assault -- "the public" needs to PAY ATTENTION.

(113,065 posts)The news media in NC is focusing more on the protests as a spectacle. The media in NC can be hopelessly naive or hopelessly complicit in allowing the GOP to move THEIR fascist agenda through the smoke created by their use of emotionally divisive issues like abortion.
