Why I oppose Senator Warren's "21st Century Glass-Seagall Act"


The mistake is not in introducing bank reform; it's naming it "Glass-Steagall". Ask 100 people on the street if they know what Glass-Steagall refers to and maybe five will know it has to do with banks: if you're lucky, one will be able to describe any of its features.

Remember Vice President Gore thinking he had a great attack line by challenging George W Bush to support "Dingell-Norwood"? Any idea what it was for? Neither did anyone watching the debate. (answer: a "Patient's Bill or Rights&quot .

"Glass-Steagall", "Dingell-Norwood", "Kemp-Roth" etc. are inside the Beltway terms that have no resonance whatsoever with the average voter. If we want to generate support for legislation it has to be well-crafted AND well-labeled. Simple names ("The Fair Banking Act"?) can lead to an understanding of a Bill's goals and help generate support with thepublic,

Bill names, like the American Prosperity Act, that actually raises taxes on the bottom 95% while reducing taxes on the top 5%....that type of thing.

think about it if Graham-Leach-Bliley had been named the "when Bill Clinton signs this you are going to be fucked" act. might have gotten the attention it deserved.
