Kane: I cannot defend state law against gay marriage
Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane announced on Thursday that she could not ethically defend the state's ban on gay marriage - and would not do so against a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union.
"We are the land of the free and the home of the brave, and I want to start acting like that," Kane told reporters during a raucous news conference at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Dozens of supporters of same-sex marriage erupted into cheers and applause as she spoke.
The decision by Kane, the state's top law enforcement official, may ultimately mean little in the actual court defense of the state marriage law. But it was heralded by activists and gay couples as a major victory in the court of public opinion.

Kane quoted Robert F. Kennedy, who in a famous speech in South Africa, two years before his assassination, said that every time a man stands up for an ideal "he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."

I can just hear all those bigoted republicans in PA collectively crapping their pants. Karen Kane is not a woman to mess with and I hope she runs for bigger office. I'd love to see her go up against Pat Toomey in 2016! We need more women like Ms. Kane in DC!!!

(9,791 posts)1. She's a peach.
PA is lucky to have her. Her name is Kathleen Kane.

(93 posts)2. I'd love to see that too, but she wouldn't have a chance.

(95,337 posts)3. why? She's already won a statewide race in Pennsyvania
so why not run for US Senator. Toomey won because it was a mid-term election and democrats got lazy. In 2016 that is a presidential election and she could easily win!
