At least 13 (some reports say 19) students sickened at Audubon Elementary School

SAN DIEGO - Emergency crews responded to reports of at least 13 children at a Lomita-area school suffering from stomach pain.

San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials told 10News multiple ambulances and fire engines were called to Audubon Elementary School on 8111 San Vicente Street shortly before 12:45 p.m.

SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque told 10News the sick children may have eaten or drank something bad, but the exact cause of the illnesses is under investigation.

Jack Brandais, a spokesman for the San Diego Unified School District, said the incident occurred just after lunch.

Brandais told 10News that school staff had checked dates on all milk and juices and nothing was out of date.

At least three of the children have been taken to Paradise Valley Hospital. Triage has been set up at the school to treat several other sick children.

School officials said the lunch menu on Thursday included three choices for students:

Mozzarella sticks with marinera sauce
Terriyaki beef sticks with rice
Turkey and cheese sandwich

Maranara sauce can go bad very quickly if they weren't handled or refridgerated properly during transportation to the school, as can Teriyaki "beef sticks".
There might also be an issue with the drinking fountains, which would be even more concerning.

Oh, for the days of real cafeteria personnel who actually cooked lunches and large lunch boxes (or grocery bags) with PB&J sandwiches, fruit or veggie sticks, and a decent sized thermos of juice or milk.
