Republican bill would defund schools that ban ‘imaginary’ and ‘pastry’ guns

A Republican congressman from Texas has introduced a bill that would defund schools that ban any type of pastries in the shape of guns, small toy guns and other types of “imaginary” firearms.

In response to reports that students had been punished for wearing an NRA T-shirt and suspended for a gun-shaped pastry, Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX) has proposed the Student Protection Act to stand up for “harmless expressions of childhood play.”

The act would block all funds for any educational institution that punishes a student for “brandishing a pastry or other food,” possessing a toy gun less than two inches, simulating a gun with the fingers or hand, “vocalizing imaginary firearms or munitions,” drawing a picture of guns or supporting Second Amendment rights on a T-shirt.

Students who build toy guns with Lego blocks or simulate guns with a pencil would also be protected.

The repukes certainly have mastered the "stupid overreaction to a silly policy" tactic. n/t hughee99 Jul 2013 #1

Schools that punish children for simulating pencils into swords or tiny rifles ... or that suspend kids for eating their sandwich into a gun shape need all the social condemnation we can muster.

But defunding? A federal case? National legislation?

I'm not sure who is are bigger idiots: principals that suspend seven year olds for being seven years olds -- or wing-bat, Tea-publican, looney-toons Congressmen from Texas.

Republicans have a lot of time to react to this kind of thing, don't they? I guess it's easier than dealing with real issues, like child hunger.

I suspect more likely it is a tiny irrelevant PR bandage on the sheer silliness that has resulted from teachers and administrators foregoing their duty to act like professionals and adults.

Yeah, a Republican came up with this, but it's about damn time. It's a pity we didn't jump all over it ourselves.
