General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSo Little Eddie Snowden is still in the transit lounge at Moscow's airport . . . . .
. . . . I hope he is able to shower and has toilet access.
Here's the deal. I think letting people know what the US government was doing to its own citizens is a good thing. Tough shit if it embarrasses a few politicians . . . including anyone's favorite politician du jour or favorite politician of all time/ever.
What he did wrong was give away the farm to non-Americans. Blowing whistles is a good thing. Indeed, it is an EXCELLENT thing (witness the unfolding shit storm in the Virginia capital). Giving away state secrets to other states is not so good. In fact, it could reasonably be held as spying or treason or some other high crime. Not smart to do.
Part of me cheers Little Eddie on. Part of me wants his bony ass in prison.
All of me is pissed at the government for doing this. All of me is pissed at the government leaders that caused the government to do this and those weak-assed politicians who didn't start it, but simply (weakly) perpetuated it; that isn't even leadership. Its followership.
Keep trying, Eddie. Had you done it right, this shit didn't need to cover you neck deep.

(1,348 posts)From several years ago. I wonder if Snowden is eating saltines and ketchup and sleeping in two chairs pushed together?
We can only hope.

(19,841 posts)so the people of other heavily surveilled states who don't like it thank him, too.
No right way to do this.

(14,459 posts)But the US Gov't made this necessary. They've destroyed every whistleblower that has tried to stop this. The actually tortured Manning. Snowden knew what would happen had he not done it this way. He even worked with Greenwald to limit the releases to things the way the Wikileaks didn't.
Snowden is probably screwed- he's out in the world without much protection and too many enemies. I doubt there will be a happy ending for him...but he managed to get everyone's attention and keep it. The US is out of control, and there may be real change that comes from this.
Had the Obama admin not continued the Bush policies, we wouldn't even know who Edward Snowden was. I really would have preferred that.

(67,818 posts)This administration has disappointed on so many issues.
I still don't like that Snowden gave secrets to other countries. Not the facts so much, but the means and methods.

(9,766 posts)Naively, I thought he looked like a guy at a desk looking, maybe at a note pad.
But you're probably right. Yes. I see that now.
You've convinced me! Snowden is an armpit -sniffing TRAITOR, who should be jailed for life.
Thanks for the most transformative post I've seen on DU, re: Snowden. My outlook has changed. Fuck the 4th ammendment! ....because...Armpits!!!!!!!!!
It was hard to top that thread last month about who was hottest, Snowden or his girlfriend. (That was a very important discussion, because if his girlfriend is hotter than him, it means he's a spy.)
This one here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=3035121
That was a pretty good one, but THIS post knocks it out of the park.
I do wish you'd inserted a fart joke though, because farts are funnier than armpits.

(26,355 posts)Didn't think so.
And for clarity, I don't consider exposure of criminal activity by our government to be exposure of a legitimate state secret.
Nuclear codes are a legitimate state secret. PRISM is not.

(39,909 posts)I have not seen ANY evidence that Snowden gave legitimate State Secrets to ANY foreign government.
There IS documentation that Snowden turned over information that the US Government has classified as "secret" to several NEWS organizations.
What those NEWS Organizations chose to do with that information THEIR responsibility.
