the religious right doesn't want people to have sex for fun - they have noted, repeatedly, that humans are only supposed to have sex if the purpose is to make a baby.

saying sex should only be for making babies is saying that humans are animals whose sex drive evolved for that purpose - to reproduce.

it's like the right wingers are making a selfish gene argument - the one that posits there is no god and evolution explains even their religious beliefs - reproduction is the only goal.

however, we can demonstrate that reproduction is not the only goal for human sex because, if it were, women would only have sex when in estrus and would look like this when they are receptive:



Instead, humans evolved in such a way that they have sex for fun and not just for reproduction. (which is also why human females don't look like other great apes during ovulation.)

or, more to the point, use sexual contact to diminish tensions within their communities rather than resorting to violent ways of dealing with issues of social hierarchies -

bonobos' sexual activity doesn't fit into human ideas of "alities."

sexual acts occur in all different kinds of configurations and are not limited to male-female or female-female or male-male.

bonobo females do have a visible estrus cycle - and it exists for a longer time than in common chimps.

but there are all sorts of mammals that have demonstrated homosexual behavior - so it seems that homosexuality is part of the natural world.

that selfish gene idea still has interesting things to say, but I like some of the work that looks at broader issues - the way in which affiliative behavior, or social benefit behavior, benefits the individual, too. We already know sexuality isn't just for reproduction, so it seems that social bonds can confer benefits for a group.

9. Well I've also seen stories on "primate prostitution" where females offer fruit for sex.

It's been a long time since I've seen one so I don't have a reference, but it has been observed with chimps and a few other primates.

and female bonobos control food sharing - so they aren't using sex to get food

so, the most sexual advantageous social structure that we know of in the primate world involves female control of the most valuable resources.

instead of "paying" - they share and also engage in lots of sex.
