http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_SCHOOLS_SERVING_DINNER?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2012-02-18-15-13-49KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Too often it is after the fact that teachers discover their students are worrying less about math and reading and more about where the next meal comes from.
So Doug White, principal of Garfield Elementary School in inner-city Kansas City, was relieved when his school, like many across the country, began offering dinner to students enrolled in after-school child-care or tutoring programs.
With breakfast and lunch already provided for poor students, many children now are getting all their meals at school.
"When you know about those situations those kids are bringing into the school and we are asking them to sit down and concentrate and do their work, and they might be hungry and we haven't been made aware of it yet - we definitely want to do everything we can to help the kids," White said.

and some staff to watch the children and you have a boarding school.
Next step?

It is a serious situation, hunger in children,
lack of shelter and food.
What solution would you suggest to remedy the situation?
The school lunches and snacks are often the only meals they eat all day.
God knows what they do on the weekends...
Go hungry I guess.

I'm willing to wager that Doug White is not a Republican.
I used to keep instant oatmeal, fruit and granola bars in my desk
for kids. A kid with a growling stomach is unable to focus.
Several of my students were living in cars or motels.
Their parents or parent, worked 2 or 3 jobs and still
could not provide adequate shelter or food.
Great country we live in, eh?
