I believe that the German civilians knew what was going on to at least some extent.

4. I've seen it a few times

And as one actually educated in WW2 history I can say I sympathize with all victims of war.

I sympathize with the millions of Jews and gypsies, homosexuals and socialists who were first dehumanized and then tortured and murdered.

I sympathize with the millions of Russians and Ukrainians killed by Stalin before and during the war including Russian POW's who were executed upon return to their homeland for cowardice.

I sympathize for millions of East Prussian women and children who were brutalized and killed by the Red horde advancing West.

And YES I sympathize with German civilians who were killed in terror bombings and due to inaction by their own leaders. I sympathize with the German foot soldier who was a mechanic who was worked to death for 10 years in a Soviet gulag after the war.

In fact I'm full of sympathy for ANYONE involved.

my mom grew up and I was bornb in Frankfurt am Main and according to my mom, they knew fucking well what was going on!!! But to allieviate that some, the mass of the German people were powerless to do anything about it. My mom said it was because when they had a chance when Hitler first came t power, they were silent, still reeling from World WarI and the Great Depression.

Isn't so much with german civilians as with the "History" channel. They spent much time crying about "atrocities" by the Red Army. Not a second of coverage to the resistance women of Poland and Russia tortured and hung by the S.S.. BULLSHIT

None of the players were honorable there... For every raped Russian there was a raped German civilian. The primary difference was discipline. The German Army terrorized Russian citizens as part of a plan and the Russians terrorized German civilians as an undisciplined mob.

And last but not least Stalin=hitler although I'm inclined to say Stalin was worse.
