http://www.thepetitionsite.com/503/600/056/dont-imprison-marissa-alexander-for-standing-her-ground/?cid=email_na?taf_id=9434768&cid=email_naThe next threat came just nine days after giving birth to their daughter. Gray, in a rage, cornered her and threatened to kill her. But instead of shooting him, she aimed upward. The only thing she hit was the ceiling.
Gray ran into the street, claiming she threatened to kill him and his boys. Marissa, on his word alone, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
For protecting her life and children she was just sentenced to twenty years in prison, even though Gray has since admitted his intention to harm her. There's no excuse for Florida to deny this responsible mother her freedom.

(6,324 posts)For SYG- or even good judgement.
First, she went to his dwelling- she had not lived there for several months- despite having a restraining order against him, meaning she violated the order. That alone is enough to put her in jail.
Yeah, I am jaded, but nothing got me angrier than when I was working DV to spend half a shift getting an order of protection for a woman, only to have her go right back and get into a confrontation with the guy. When that happened, if she went to him, I took her to jail. The orders aren't worth a damn if one party can ignore it and use it like a weapon against the other.
Second problem is she left the confrontation, grabbed the gun, went back to the confrontation, then discharged it in an unsafe fashion in the direction of her kids.
Not a sound decision in the whole mix.
Is it worth the long sentence? No, but she is far from innocent here.
If anything, the miscarriage in this case stems from the mandatory minimum sentencing laws that forced the long sentence in this case.

(7,362 posts)She pointed the gun at her husbands head but turned her head and closed her eyes as she pulled the trigger, this missing him. It was not a warning shot.
Also, when she left to get the gun she was not in any danger at all, it was just a verbal argument.

(6,324 posts)It almost seems like a concentrated effort to spread disinformation to get people wrongly up in arms.
Is the new strategy if you lose in court to hire a publicist and social media manager instead of filing an appeal? Staring to seem that way.
