2 Maine hikers rescued but drive to ocean deaths

ROQUE BLUFFS, Maine (AP) — Authorities say two women who got lost while hiking in a Maine state park died in a car accident shortly after their rescue.

Thirty-seven-year-old Amy Stiner, of Machias (muh-CHY'-us), and 38-year-old Melissa Moyer, of Sunbury, Pa., were killed Tuesday night when they drove their car into the ocean after driving the wrong way down a road. The county sheriff says Stiner was five months pregnant.

Officials say the women became lost while hiking at Roque Bluffs State Park. A landowner found them and their dog and gave them a ride to a home. Authorities later took them back to their car.

A short time later, the women called to say they had driven their vehicle into the water — and then the phone went dead. The car was later found underwater.

Maybe the road ended in a bluff and it was dark? Following faulty GPS?

It happened in my small town several yrs back. Young adults, dusk, they drove off a dock dropping 8 feet to the water. They didn't know they were in the ocean until water started coming into the car, thought they'd hit a big pothole. They were talking about suing the port for not blocking off ocean access but decided to drop it after receiving hysterical laughter.

drove straight off the boat launch. It was foggy, rainy, and getting dark and they made a wrong turn.

Driving across flooded bridges and roads, gps tells them to go that way so they do and end up being washed away or classically they think being in an suv means they can go right through the water.
