We finally stopped one in Florida.
Don't ask me how. Wish we could bottle the formula.
Bill to protect lawmakers from testifying is dead
The House proposal enraged open government advocates. The state Democratic Party called it an "outrageous and transparent abuse of legislative power," in a release last week.
Prior to Aubuchon's announcement, House Speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, blasted the "hysterical reaction" to the bill as "ill-informed and politically-motivated."
"Unfortunately, a debate this year on this subject will never be free of partisan rancor, blatant political opportunism, and unrestrained hypocrisy on the part of those who wish to discredit the most open and transparent redistricting process in Florida's history," Cannon added.
Not long after, though, House Redistricting Chair (and Speaker-designate) Will Wetherford, R-Wesley Chapel, posted on Twitter his support for killing the bill: "There is no need for HB 7123 right now. I am glad Speaker Cannon is going to pull the plug on the bill. The right thing to do," he tweeted.
