I am no longer working for the company I was. I can tell all and hope all learn from it.

Last edited Mon Feb 20, 2012, 10:07 PM - Edit history (1)

The twlemarketing company worked for various companies like Time Warner Cable, Guthy Ranker Products-certain ones, Ageless Male, and other things, I also had to do calls for College Republicians,Jay Sekalow and the stupid ACLJ, The company did various callings for Newt Gingrich, Took calls for Benny Hinn and a Fundie channel,NRA and Conservatives (CPAC)

Never would have taken that job if I had known the truth.

They wanted me to take the blame for something I didn't do.

I have my dignity for what it is worth and I start looking for a job tomorrow. I can only hope it gets better quickly. I know I don't want put stress on my husband. I will do whatever is needed to make him not suffer. I know he is concerned.

you may qualify if you work for someone for cash then they "lay you off". Wash a car, mow a lawn, whatever. They become your last employer. Often, the company you just left takes the hit on their unemployment tax. Check it out.

of their clients are realy jacka$$ and only care about money.

Just about every program had some sort of script. Some scripts are easy they say here is the idea of what to say but be yourself and help the people as best as you could.

Those where calls I enjoyed. It allowed me to help people and feel like I wasn't shoving things down the person's throat.

Some calls demanded you say EVERY Word on a script. That was kind of hard espeically when people tell you they don't have a credit card You can't respect that answer and end the call. You have to rebuttle after rebuttle. It was BULL. One script for a male product demanded one request than 4 rebuttle. The company that had us do the calls was so desperate for the money that they would allow us to tell the customer that if they had a friend or relative to let them use their card to order the product. (Other companies wanted to protect customers and and we couldn't take the card unless it belong to the person on the call -which was protecting the company and client./cardholder) Ageless male is the name of the product that demanded 4 rebuttles. And the latest thing is getting people to allow the company to charge for the product monthly repeat after repeat mailing the product out to you or buyer. The thing that really upset me is rebuttle after rebuttle you had to read until they bought or hung up on you and most people are kind and don't want to hang up. So you are making them uncomfortable and angry and blowing air on a dead fish-the sale.

The political calls scared the hell out of me. The latest script will get someone kill-I am sure of it. It is a standard script-what I mean you say I'm calling for ____ (Some conservative organization or Republican organization.) We want to ask a 1 question poll BUT first we want you to hear a message explaining the poll or something like that--The Tape message is usually from the chairperson who says a lot of LIES (for better or worse) Get these people to stay on the phone. The question is a smoke screen to feel out how these people feel AND then you go into the real reason why you are calling. MONEY WE WANT MONEY! AND it isn't enough to get them to mail in money they want that FREAKIN credit card number.

The script for the Republican organization calls started the ask with the line "We are afraid that if some DRAMATIC isn't done soon to get rid of Obama he is going to destroy us" THAT line terrified me because some of these people I talked to had a few screws loose BUT hey if they give money you agree with them. All I could think was IF someone took a shot at Obama and had heard that script I would feel like I was to blame.

Next time you are talking to someone be a little gentle when they keep requesting credit card because they may not have a choice.

More later

got one of those calls representing Santorum and stating that, if re-elected, Obama was going to cut off her Social Security checks (it's what she lives on). Unfortunately, she gave them her credit card number. Ninety years old. I don't EVER want to hear one of these sons of bitches talk about morality -- taking social security money from a 90-year-old. May they all rot in hell.

I always had a suspicion that telemarketers were required to continue to sell until the third "no". I believed this because DH was in floor sales at a brick & mortar store and that was standard sales training. That, and "assume yes" were corporate mantras.

Knowing this, I will always be polite with my first no. When the push back starts, I interrupt (even if they don't stop talking). Say, "Sorry, not interested." Click.

Does that make for a telemarketer's bad day?

However, I know I'm a sympathetic and persuadable type. It's much safer for me to stop the conversation after the first no (see, I *know* why they push for the third no, they are rarer than the first by a good margin.) It's self preservation, for me. However, if it's beneficial to the poor schmuck on the other end of the line, I could just quietly set the phone down until the full spiel has been spun, if it would be a better outcome for the caller.

I'm surprised people stay on the line with telemarketers long enough to even say "No" once, much less face rebuttals.

I figured I save everyone time by simply hanging up when I realize it is a telemarketer. Since I'm on the DNC list, I've never felt guilty about it, but I'm still surprised many people listen and even get to the credit card point.

I must be becoming a crotchety old curmudgeon!

More people need to hear about these things. You are doing a service and this will help someone who would fall for the money come on.
People are desperate and some are vulnerable to parting with their last dime.

You would make a great advocate for honesty and ethics in sales. There's nothing wrong with marketing but there is a festering disease of cynicism and greed that has taken over commerce.

Just my opinion but I think you would make a great interview, even anonymously, for a television or newspaper expose'. I would be glad to make calls to stations if you are interested. I bet a lot of people would like to hear about the deceptive practices of telemarketing firms.
