In spite of the social media “outrage” and the right-wing media narrative, however, the Baby Santiago case only illustrates just how prevalent racism really is in the United States. Just days after Sherry West told police her 13 month old was shot and killed by two black teens, West’s 21 year old daughter went to police to tell them that she suspected her mother may have killed her infant brother. Ashley Glassey told CBS News in March, that her mother has serious mental health issues. These include a diagnosis of bi-polar with accompanying schizophrenic tendencies. West also talked with the media about how she was removed from her mother’s care at the age of 8, because of abuse and neglect in the home. Immediately after the shooting, Glassey said West began asking questions about how long it would take her to collect the insurance money. West’s daughter also told both media and police that her mother made conflicting statements to her, regarding the child’s death - including different stories about who was shot first. West’s inconsistencies and suspicious behavior caused her own daughter to tell police and reporters that she suspected her mother was not telling the truth about how the infant was killed. CBS News reported several days later that police had not followed up with Glassey, nor had they taken her statement. A follow-up call by the press to the police, was never returned.

On July 16th further evidence was released to the public that implicates the parents involvement in the child’s death. Police tests immediately following the shooting revealed gun powder on the hands of both Sherry West and the baby’s father, Louis Santiago. Santiago claimed that he was nowhere near the scene of the shooting. This evidence too, was withheld for months, until the defense attorney in the case demanded that it be released in mid July.

Gunshot residue particles can be removed easily from the surfaces they land on. Regular activities, such as putting hands in pockets, rubbing hands together, or handling items, can wipe them away.4 The washing of hands can remove most, if not all, particles. Rates of loss vary widely with the activity of the subject. Depending on conditions and activity, particles may be removed from a shooter’s hands within 4 to 5 hours after a shooting event.5 They also can transfer from a surface or person to another individual; the amount depends on the number of GSR particles on the contaminated surface (e.g., a person’s clothing or hands) and likely will be a small percentage of the total number of particles present. Tests show that people standing within 3 feet to the side of a shooter may have GSR on their hands, whereas those standing 10 or more feet in the same direction typically will not.

5. Well, there's the fact that the kid was shot with a .22 handgun, and that

the defendant in this case used a .22 handgun to shoot someone else in an armed robbery two weeks earlier, and that the defendant's mom and sister lied about his alibi and then took police somewhere where there just magically happened to be a .22 handgun that had been disposed of.

Land told detectives that DeMarquise asked him if he knew any Mexicans. Lang said he believed DeMarquise intended to rob someone.

A few minutes later, Lang said DeMarquise showed a revolver with a brown wooden handle that he had hidden in his waistband.

According to the affidavit, the two walked along Ellis Street when DeMarquise said, "There goes a lady."

The lady happened to be Sherry West, who was pushing her son in a baby stroller, just a few yards from their home.

The two boys walked up to West when DeMarquise ordered the woman to give up her purse. West said no, and according to Lang, that's when DeMarquise pulled out the revolver, aimed it at West, and hit her with it. The two then struggled when the gun went off twice, according to Lang. The second shot hit West in her leg.

Lang told detectives DeMarquise then said toWest, "Give me your purse or I am going to shoot your baby."

DeMarquise, according to Lang's interview with detectives, aimed the revolver at the stroller and pulled the trigger.

The baby, 13-month-old Antonio Santiago, was shot and killed

10. All I can say if the left and the right

refuse to report without a slant we are all up the creek without a paddle. I will try to find more info on the subject and if anyone knows if this trial will be televised I would like to watch. In this day and age we all must be critical of ANY information we are given. Thank you for your replies.

Sherry West began making talk show and news interview appearances just days after the young Antonio Santiago was killed. She appeared on CNN on March 26th, giving the following statement.


“I was walking home from the post office from mailing a letter and I was 5 minutes from my home. I was approached by a young man and some other boy that was hiding behind him, and he yelled at me, give me your money, and I proceeded to tell him that I don’t have any. And he shot — pulled out a gun and shot at the ground.




“And I didn’t see any shells, so I thought the gun was a cap gun or a bee-bee gun. I thought he was using a toy gun to scare me. Then he shot at my head and the bullet grazed my ear and the side of my head. And then he shot me in the leg. And I still thought that it was a fake gun. And you know, neighbors had BB guns, and it stung. I injured my leg moving furniture days before and I was on pain medicine, so I didn’t feel it. But I felt stinging. And then it got numb.

“And I didn’t realize, you know, that it was real. It didn’t look like a real gun. And apparently he kept asking me and I kept telling him I don’t have any.
And he shot my baby in the face. And then I knew it was a real gun. And I screamed and I was scared to scream because I thought he was going to shoot me in the head and not miss that time. And then when I kept screaming for someone to call the police and the EMT, he shoved me and grabbed me and then he ran. And then I wasn’t sure if he was gone, but I quickly, limping, wheeled my baby into a yard next to me, into the gate.”

Prior to her CNN appearance, West spoke with the Associated Press, on March 23, giving a statement which nearly mirrors the one above. West tells the AP that “two boys” approached her while she was out walking with her baby. The boys demand money, which she tells them she doesn’t have. One of them shoots the gun at the ground, then shoots her the first, time, grazing her ear. The same boy then shoots her in the leg before shooting the baby in the face. One small discrepancy between these two statements, however, is that in her statements to the AP she says one of the boys tried to grab her purse and then he shoved her, before shooting her in the ear. During the AP interview West shows her ear to the camera, although if there is an injury, it does not appear to be visible in the video.

In another on-camera interview just hours after the shooting, when West invited reporters from Fox News 30 (WAWS Jacksonville) into her home, her statement varies again. In this interview she says “I put my arms over my baby and he shoves me and then he shot my baby right in the head.”

In another statement made to a WTLV reporter, West reportedly said that the killer “fired the first shot into the ground, then shot her in the left ear and upper left leg. The gunman then walked around the stroller and shot her child once in the face.” This description of events was also given to reporters at Yahoo News. There is no mention of her trying to shield the baby with her arms, in fact this description suggests that in order to shoot the baby, the killer had to walk around the stroller, away from where West was standing, in order to shoot the child.

Something else strikes me odd as the Baby Santiago case. There are hundreds of accounts of the shooting from March 21, 2013, the day that it occurred. Yet, there are no descriptions of the alleged killers to be found, even from the days when police were supposedly engaging in a man hunt for two killers on the loose. There is no information from before the arrests regarding the height or weight of the suspects, the clothing they were wearing, any identifying marks, and there is no composite sketch… Details released by police and media reports from those who interviewed Sherry West are strangely absent of almost all identifying characteristics. What we do know about who police were supposed to be looking for may come as a surprise. Several media outlets reported that in the hours immediately after the shooting, West stated she believed the killers were between 10 and 15 years old and that she thought the younger suspect could be as young as 5 years old. “Police were combing school records and canvassing neighborhoods searching for the pair. While police have said the two boys were between the ages of 10 and 15, the mother says she believes the younger boy was as young as 5 years old.”......
