11. Okay let's be honest here, seeing birth defects would prompt a few abortions.

That's just a consequence of human nature, even if it does not entirely represent human nature: nobody looks forward to a baby with defects, some will choose abortion to prevent a baby with defects from being born. You'd have to be insane and naive not to realize this.

That doesn't mean I support Santorum's point of view. Even if I did, Santorum would starve these kids AFTER they're born by removing every last social program designed to take care of them.

There is some serious cognitive dissonance going on with the bulk of the pro-life movement as far as this is concerned.

certain prenatal test results do prompt abortions. But his implication made it seem a lot more like people practicing eugenics than the reality of new parents faced with the possibility of terrible birth defects.

I should also add that Santorum said people would be required to have prenatal tests (paid for by insurance or taxpayers), which would lead to more abortions, because that would be cheaper than caring for a child with birth defects.

"One of the things that you don't know about ObamaCare in one of the mandates is they require free prenatal testing," Santorum began telling about 400 people here. "Why? Because free prenatal testing ends up in more abortions and, therefore, less care that has to be done, because we cull the ranks of the disabled in our society. That too is part of ObamaCare — another hidden message as to what president Obama thinks of those who are less able than the elites who want to govern our country."

Sweden to have an abortion because her child was so deformed from the thalidomine she took.

The major difference was that in Europe a large support system was enacted to support the thalidomine babies, including the fitting of artificial limbs, health care and schooling. Here, Americans would have praise each other for supporting "life", and after the child was born they would have thrown it a pair of bootstraps.

She was a TV show host in Phoenix, I believe. First public discussion of abortion I read about.

that I encountered the hyper-emotional superstitious wing-nuts. The fetus was not viable, would have probably died during the pregnancy. They could not even tell the sex.

But as long as rich, Republican women could get D&Cs for uterine anomalies, abortions were off the table for the poor.

I couldn't think of a better way to "cull" old folks than to slash that "entitlement".

at a school for the profoundly disabled. Some of these children were very tragic in that they were the product of horrible abuse and malnourishment after a more or less normal birth. However, most were the products of extreme errors in the genetic processes of reproduction. Many had been "saved" from natural miscarriage by advanced medical intervention to prevent it.

Some of these kids were born with major portions of the brain and skull missing, only to be patched together by heroic surgical efforts. Some suffered every day of their (thankfully) short lives. You did what ever you could do for them that seemed to provide some measure of comfort and reduce suffering. At this level (IQ between 0 and 25), most of the kids were wards of the state, as the parents did not have the resources to provide the nearly 24 hour care needed.

BTW in case you did not know an IQ of 0 generally means "not responsive to stimulus" (light, sound, or touch). If this set of kids ever responded to anything at all, their condition was considered improved.

We don't actually cull these kids, often we go to heroic efforts to "save" them.

If we could just assure that the kids actually born healthy and normal were protected from abuse, given proper nourishment, and a decent education, I would be impressed. But Rikky is not talking about that....
