Anybody else have the same problem?
My gym has a row of TVs at the front of the room, and two of them are always the regular Fox News, and then there's Fox Business. Yes, someone actually has a TV set tuned to Fox Business.
It's happened in every gym I've been to in the last few years. I can't seem to get away from it. Why do so many gyms like to put on Fox News instead of maybe the BBC or CNN? Sigh...
They don't really let us change stations. The best I can do is take music with me and turn it up really loud.

(32,611 posts)I know from personal experience that the other gym rats are pretty vocal and like to make up rules but once management is made aware they usually come up with a balanced resolution.

I have to ask each time...one TV has Fox and the other has

(1,407 posts)I do. When I notice that crap is on, and no one is watching, I change the channel.

(23,156 posts)unquestioned assumption that there must be TVs and they must be turned on at the gym.
If I were to join one ever again (I belonged for a year or so back in the 90s) I'd only join one with no TVs.
Of course, it's not just gyms. It's almost every waiting room everywhere.

(23,156 posts)perhaps it is the one that streams a fish tank. It's the assumed utter inability to wait without the idiot box on.
I have no qualms at all about changing station, or turning it off altogether.
Some years ago I was in the waiting room of a car dealership while my oil was being changed. I forget now exactly what story was on, but it was clearly something that young children should not be watching. As the story came on, I suggested to the mother of the young child in the room that I switch channels or turn off (can no longer remember which) and she heartily agreed.
I don't always bother to ask permission.
But it's the constant presence of TV, regardless of the channel, that bothers me. If I were in charge I'd have a collection of books and magazines, puzzles for little kids, and embroidery or crochet projects handy for the adults who want them. You guys might want to suggest wood-working projects.

(8,090 posts)I don't even like the music/screens at gas station pumps. I don't think people have enough silence in their lives, or periods without constant stimulation. And the constant marketing is annoying.

(28,581 posts)I know my daughter loves music at the gym. Personally, I prefer audiobooks, they let me drift off into the story. Maybe it's just how each individual is wired.

It may be just me, but I think it is getting better. Fox News used to be on at a lot more places than it is now. People are catching on to what a joke Fox News and its half-wit viewers are.
