In 2008, Sen. Rick Santorum spoke at Ave Maria University and said that Satan is destroying academia, politics, and the Protestant Church.Santorum told the students at Ave Maria how lucky they were to be living in a time when God's Army is more needed than ever because all of the major institutions in society were under attack by Satan.
The audio of Santorum's remarks is still posted on the Ave Maria website and the bulk of his speech was dedicated to explaining how God had used him, his political career, and even the death of his son Gabriel in the fight to outlaw abortion in America.
But Santorum began his remarks by explaining to the students in attendance how every institution in America has been destroyed by Satan; from academia to politics with even the church having fallen under His sway - not the Catholic church, of course, but "mainline Protestantism" which is in such "shambles" that it is not even Christian any longer:

Remember, it's SATAN'S FAULT when we have a republican President but it's Obama's fault when we have a Democratic President.

American witch hunters didn't burn the people they accused of witchcraft - Europeans ones did.

(3,338 posts)being built up to derail Romney, because the Hidden Chiefs (and chefs) of the
Repub party are beginning to see Romney as a disaster waiting to happen, and
they want someone else. They have no intention of having Santorum as the nominee.
Once is usefulness is over, he will be dropped like a rotten peach.

(15,384 posts)That first applied to Newt and now are being thrown at Rick. The GOP has really gotten this batshit insane over the years where those two are viable candidates for the nomination. Rick has never been the smartest guy in the room, and his staff always made sure he had handlers around to help keep him from wandering too far into Nutty-Land, but every now and then he slipped his tether and really showed what he was about, and it's not any different than now - it's just he's on a national stage, and we get to see more of it. The same is true of Newt.
Among other ego-centric problems (Newt wants to avenge what was "done to him" in the 90s), both see themselves as some sort of savior of humankind. Newt is convinced that he's more intelligent and more forward-thinking than anyone else, and we need his hand to guide us in making the correct choices in the future. Rick is convinced that he's the only one capable of beating back Satan - he was taking views and making them public on subjects no other politician was - specifically how he would do away with birth control - before other repubs saw it as a potential election year wedge issue between Obama and Catholics. They've picked it up for other reasons - supposedly freedom of religion while Rick's views run "deeper," that it's a threat to society.
If you've read the C-Street Book and the Family about the cult of religious nutjobs in our government belong to, Rick is one of them. He's just not flying under the radar like maybe his colleagues would like him to, and it's because he feels this is the last chance to beat back Satan, and he's the man to do it.

(37,573 posts)many evangelicals and fundamentalists think that most Protestant churches are not really preaching from "the Bible" and are using a liberal social gospel theology which was a mix of socialism and Christianity from the turn of the 19th century.
It's not playing to lose, because most liberal protestants, are not gonna vote for him anyway.

(5 posts)Don't call the man insane just because he speaks consistantly with his theology. Would you call Rev. Wright insane? (possible bad example)
I personally do not, as a believer in the Christian God subscribe to this kind of talk. I view this blaming Satan thing as a way to avoid our own responsibility for the ills of our lives and the world around us. That being said, many people sincerely believe this type of talk and it does not make them insane.
You know what seems insane to me? Blowing yourself up in hopes of killing your so-called enemies. That's insane. How does removing yourself from the fight you so passionately believe in make you a winner?
As I said, I do not agree with the man and primarily because this type of ideology is usually centered around America as if other Christians around the world are of lesser importance to God.

The important question is, do we want this person leading our nation? I really, really, emphatically, do not.

(9,854 posts)You can be crazy as a shithouse mouse and still be in accordance with your personal version of theology. In fact, some of our BEST crazy people have done what they did in the name of some version of God.
And now YOUR bias is showing. Christian psychos are fine and dandy. Muslim psychos are the REAL psychos. At least suicide bombers are putting their EVERYTHING where their mouth is.
