Where the Church of Rick Santorum Came From

http://www.esquire.com/blogs/politics/rick-santorum-church-talk-6789284

As house Papist around this place, I figure it's up to me to explain exactly where all the religious-themed crackpottery emanating from Rick Santorum is really coming from, and it's not just because he's, you know, something of a dick, and have I mentioned recently what a dick he is? It all happened a long time ago, in the 1970's, when the fundamentalist Protestants first organized themselves into a formidable machine in order to throw democracy down a wel... er... exert their influence in our secular politics. The Catholics, poor souls, were somewhat left behind, to coin a phrase. This was because the particular strain of American Protestantism was also virulently anti-Catholic. The Pope was the whore of Babylon. The Catholic Eucharist was an abomination. The Catholic churches were full of idolatrous graven images. And that whole Catholic cult of Mary? Yoicks, as Luther once said to Zwingli while sitting on the can.

That's what produced Rick Santorum — a 20-year effort to develop Roman Catholics who could talk like Southern Baptists, bonded as both groups were now by their twisted views of human sexuality, and by their desire to re-establish control over what American women can do with their bodies. It is an alliance of powerful convenience. It has as much to do with religion as it has to do with agriculture. It has as much to do with the Gospels as it has to do with the Collected Works of Ludwig von Mises. Jesus wept.

It has NOTHING to do with the Gospels. It is all about controlling other people & making them bow down to you (metaphorically & probably literally)

better way to bring people back to the church by appealing to the fundamentalist mindset. Backfire? No doubt.

that the Pope would have no effect on his decision making. My how it has all changed in 50 years.

Or maybe he became president because his father bought votes in West Virginia.
