Poll: Do you live in a multicultural household?

Last edited Mon Jul 29, 2013, 09:57 PM - Edit history (2)

This is a continuation of Mr. Scorpio's Color Blind/Multicultural poll.

As for my household, I'm Native American (Eastern Apache) Ally's Irish, and our kids are half Irish, half Rwandan (Ally met her first husband while she was in the peace corps).

I'm pretty sure our little clan qualifies as multicultural.

On edit, I changed my answer to Other. We all share similar values, tastes are some what different regarding entertainment, but as a whole we are cut from the same cloth, if this was truly a colorblind world.

My kids know they look different, in an almost 85% cacasion city, they do stand out. A few years ago my son said he did not want to go somewhere with us, because everyone thinks he's adopted. Does our self image define us, do we surrender that decision to others, is the determination of multicultural shared?

I really don't know, and up to now I have only had stark almost cartoonish differences in mind, i.e. southern black family, vs New York Jewish.

Irish, German, Cuban...

We speak English, but some can speak Spanish.

One cat is black, one cat is white.

3 out if the 4 are gay.

It's not bad... I'd say.

Is this a recent buzzword I missed? What does that mean? And is there something wrong with "color blind" now?

I want to be sure I don't post something that isn't acceptable anymore.

Could it include a household of European stock, but comprised of individuals from northern and southern states..?

I don't know what, or if there is, a well defined boundary.

I have Native American blood in me, but I'm largely of European descent with a heavy lean towards the Brits. So my people slaughtered my people and stole my people's land.

I'm quite conflicted inside. But is that conflict multicultural? I'm so lost.

I don't know if multicultural is wholly or partially based on genotype/phenotype circumstances..

I am primarily Native American, Apache, Yaqui, Tarahumara, and one other tribe On my dad's side.

Culturally, if you only knew me by first name, and from written, and phone conversation you likely assume I was of European stock.

Even though I am Native, at powwows I feel a vast cultural divide between me, and my "Res" brethren.

This poll is a question I have never given serious thought too, and is not as simple as it would appear on face value.

adj.
1. Of, relating to, or including several cultures.
2. Of or relating to a social or educational theory that encourages interest in many cultures within a society rather than in only a mainstream culture.

Everybody in my househould belong to the general western culture. Do you consider different nations as having different cultures? When one becomes a naturalized citizen is culture naturalized? Is Jewish a culture or a religon? If so, is Ultra right wing orthadox, ultra othradox, orthadox, conservative, and reform different sub-cultures? Is there a gay culture? Is straight just part of the majority culture? Is Southern a Culture, or California?

More seriously I'm immediately surrounded by people who are both ethnically different from me and economically of a different class. My actual household is just me and a couple of smallish dogs.

We don't have children yet, but we just got married and she wants to leave school before having children. Seattle is very multicultural, especially Asian cultures, so this will never be a problem. The local schools have a lot of children with full or part Asian ancestry, even when I was a kid. She found acclimating quite easy in the Pacific Northwest.

As far as our religion, I am Buddhist, my husband is agnostic theistic(believes in God but hates all organized religion), my daughter and son are both atheist agnostic(believes there is no God but don't claim they know for sure), and my father is evangelical Christian. Last year my mother in law was living with us and she is Wiccan. As far as politics, my husband and I are both independents, my daughter is democrat, and my father is republican. My son hasn't shown an interest in politics yet. As far as sexuality, my daughter is bisexual. The rest of us are straight. It has been interesting to live with so many backgrounds and beliefs. There have been times where we have gotten in heated arguments especially between my father and the rest of the family. We have tried to calm things down a bit. We lightly discuss things like religion and politics but we try not to convince or convert each other. We try to treat each other with respect. Even with our differences we love each other too much to destroy our relationships.

She's Catholic and I'm non-religious with an Evangelical background.

We've got everything pretty much everything covered, except Latino.... For that I'd have to defer to my Mexican-American-Dutch-Indonesian nieces and nephews... For Arab, I also have some Moroccan-Dutch-Indonesian-African-American nieces and nephews

It's all about the love, baby.

I am of Irish/Welsh descent, and my first wife, with whom my kids were hatched, was of Greek/Italian/Irish descent.....we divorced in 98 and she passed away in may this year....

My wife is black, and my 4 step children are biracial, the older children's father was Irish and the younger boys dad was of Puerto Rican descent....my stepdaughter, 15, and my oldest stepson,20, could pass for Caucasian or Hispanic.....they are all beautiful kids, and they are blood relatives to my kids. Love isn't where you find it, love finds you....

My wife once asked me how I saw her....I told her I saw her as a beautiful woman who seems to like big dumb, dopey country boys...we've been friends and lovers for nearly 12 years now....she is my love and my life...I love my step kids like my own...I'm a parent...I enjoy the role!
