I am on fucking vacation. I am supposed to be ralaxing and having a good time. But the goddamned survailance state is busy digitally raping my family.
It's not enough that I have to tell my six year old that he must remove his shoes to get on a plane because they think he might want to blow it up. No.
As we are getting back on the fucking disney monorail to go back into the park to watch the goddamned fireworks after dinnner, my stepmother and I go through the turnstile and look back to see my wife and child have been pulled aside to be fucking photographed by some goon.
We were told that their tickets, which are barcoded and issued to people by name, did not have their photos linked to them and they fucking line them up an takeb their ppictures. A fucking six year old for crying out loud.
We were also told that my stepmother's and my tickets already had associated photos, which must have somehow been taken without our consent or kowledge since we were never fucking asked to pose for any goddamned pictures.
I gave the bastards an earful an wanted to take the fucker's camera and smash the goddamned thing on the pavement but didn't want to ruin my kid's good time by getting locked up.
Instead I had to tell him that they were afraid he might blow up the fucking park.
I am starting to think I need some aliases just protect my family's right to fucking privacy.
Maybe it was in the fucking fine print when we purchesed the tickets, who the fuck knows, but a six year old?!
We have another day in the park and I need some sleep. Can anyone really convince me I shouldn't be so fucking angry so I can get some goddamned sleep?

(35,961 posts)Seriously. I've never been to Disneyland, but I've been on a cruise where you get a pass and they take yr photo and scan the pass and stuff when you go on and off the ship. It's no big deal. I saw kids younger than six having their pics taken. If you don't want yr photo taken, don't go to places where they have passes with photos attached to them. That's what I'd do anyway...
Hopefully you get a fucking good goddamned fucking goddamned nights sleep

But seriously, OP....I don't mean to be harsh, but my first thought as I read your diatribe (and venting is good...no worries!) is "first-world problems." The surveillance state sucks, but you're at Disney.
I also hope you and yours got a good night's sleep and have a wonderful vacation.
Violet_Crumble
(35,961 posts)I know what it's like to have gone through theme parks with kids and I reckon it's more tiring than running a marathon (not that I've ever done that).
I hope they get a really good night's sleep, and everything will look better tomorrow, and they have a fantastic holiday...
Yeah maybe first world problems for me.
But I don't think anyone should be taking ppics of my kid and putting them in a db.
And they had my fucking photo without me ever being asked to my face - that is fucked up.
OneGrassRoot
(22,920 posts)I agree, it is fucked up, but you're at Disney. Try to let the positives outweigh the surveillance state aggravation, at least while you're there.

(35,961 posts)After seeing the pics my brother took at Yosemite last year, if I ever go to the US, it's a must-visit thing for me. Disneyland is something I could easily give a miss...
I was trying to remember the last time I was victim of one of those secretly snapped photos, and it was a few months ago at Movie World here in Australia. I got dragged onto the Scooby Doo ride by my sister and when I went out the exit, there were a bunch of photos, including one with me mouthing the words 'FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! GET ME OFF THIS THING NOW!!!!' It was a real violation of my desire to hide my sheer cowardliness and I felt my rights had been trampled when my sister bought it and the whole family laughed at it ...

They are a bit harder to tie to an inndividual's identity since they don't scan your ticket and associate it with your seat on the ride.

By the way, the Kennedy Space Complex is one of the most fascinating places - particularly the great hall that contains full-sized Saturn launchers, an animonics mock-up of the launch control room, and a huge amount of space stuff -- highly recommended, other than the misleading way they recorded visitors (and the ladies in black fatigues with submachine guns). Who knows, that last part may be an added attraction for some visitors!

I'm with you about being angry about this. But the reasons this is being done are systemic, not just Disney. It's that horror that we are really facing--that we live in a surveillance state where our every move is monitored, more and more.
Try to channel your outrage effectively. It's not good to let anger fester so resolve to do something with it. Bringing this to DU alerts others to the issue, so that's a start. But tie it to the bigger picture.

(17,301 posts)There is no need to keep a photo data base on customers. Disney was making tons even without the photos by using stamping methods and controlling tickets, so their is no real need for such a data base. And there have been no terrorist attacks on Disney's amusement parks, so security is not an excuse.
They are building a photo data base of their customers for the NSA? For marketing? For possible future criminal activity?
marions ghost
(19,841 posts)--they should be willing to tell people what the photo is for. (And I mean in a way that is legally binding--not just some

joshcryer
(62,274 posts)If you're banned you'll show up in the database easily. Probably saves them tones of money in lawsuits yearly (don't need a drunken dude causing trouble). Looks like they also ban sex offenders, too.
The marketing aspect is sinister, though. If they have a good enough system they could use face recognition to follow you throughout the entire park, and figure out which rides or themes are most interesting to you, and then they can send you coupons and stuff directed at the stuff you like. It would obviously only work for regulars or people who go often the best, but it'd be a way to really get into your head and own what you care about the park.
Of course, the NSA / FBI might want to get access to those databases at their whim.
steve2470
(37,457 posts)A Massachusetts congressman named Ed Markey, co-chairman of the Congressional Bi-partisan Privacy Caucus, made headlines recently for writing Disney CEO Bob Iger asking him to answer privacy concerns about the new MyMagic+ program announced for Walt Disney World. The new billion dollar initiative involves RFID technology located inside bracelets called MagicBands. Officially, Disney says these bracelets will not be used to track visitors in their park. Opponents suggest they could be used (albeit with slight modifications) to monitor every movement. Markey expressed serious worry that children who visit the theme parks could have their privacy compromised.
Iger has now responded, calling the congressman's criticism of the new program "ludicrous." Iger's response is very direct in suggesting Congressman Markey didn't fully inform himself of the details of MyMagic+ before sending his letter. In his letter, Iger states,
"We are offended by the ludicrous and utterly ill-informed assertion in your letter dated January 24, 2013, that we would in any way haphazardly or recklessly introduce a program that manipulates children, or wantonly puts their safety at risk.
It is truly unfortunate and extremely disappointing that you chose to publicly attack us before taking the time to review our policies and/or contact us for information, which would have obviated the need for your letter. Had you or your staff made the slightest effort, you would have found most of the answers to your questions already existed and were publicly available online..."
*end of quote*
I'm guessing the CEO is not too sensitive to privacy concerns by his response.

(11,916 posts)It was called "The Patriot's Pass" which was a multi-day access pass for the historic shops and programs. Registration like that was done over the course of a couple of years at least because when I accompanied my hubby to a conference down there a year or so later, I had to do the same thing. I thought I had a day left on the original pass, but apparently it had an expiration date.

(8,821 posts)The outsourcing of government surveillance is one of our most important growth industries. Private snoops and spooks are being employed in ever increasing numbers, and in places one would never expect. The NSA's gigantic spying efforts are really only the tip of the surveillance iceberg. It turns out that the one thing Americans of all political stripes will always pay more for is protection. No amount of protection is too much, not when the threat is: "Terror!"
Be it at Disneyland, on the internet or at your local shopping mall, our guilt-driven fears that someone with Koran and a bomb might be lurking in the shadows means money is no object when it comes to saving our cowardly butts.

Shit, I'm angry enough with people calling this a "first world problem" and dismissing it off hand. When I ran the marathon there in 2000 my husband had to also control himself when they bristled if everyone didn't go exactly where they wanted them to (my husband, as he has in many of my races, tried to move from various mile markers to others to get there before me w/snacks/drinks - but this was not acceptable to the Disney Nazis who wanted everyone in single file marching in whichever direction they declared). He did much cursing as well.
We've taken the kids several times as well & enjoy the attractions. My tip is to go the smaller parks if you can - the boat rides in the country areas of Epcot are particularly nice and Mexico has great margaritas. The Magic Kingdom is always so crowded so I save that for the last day so I can actually relax for the rest of the vacation first. Animal Kingdom is probably the one folks know the least, but if you look at the map there is a carnival area with a bunch of rides that your 6-yr old will love, along with characters to meet etc ...

(10,926 posts)people can ruin a good time by being paranoid, hardheaded, and yes, STUPID.
Disney may be the last place in the world to stand on principle over having a picture taken. The appropriate thing to do in that situation when entertaining a six-year-old is to say, "Oh, look, we're getting out picture taken! Smile!!" Because GUESS WHAT, EINSTEIN? 99.99999999% of the time, SIX-YEAR-OLDS ASSOCIATE HAVING THEIR PICTURE TAKEN WITH HAVING FUN.
Because what's Disney going to do with that picture? How about NOTHING? They use it to ensure that you get the value that you paid for, and then they move on. THE ONLY PICTURES DISNEY CARES ABOUT ARE THE ONES OF DEAD PRESIDENTS IN YOUR WALLET.
It's a TRANSACTION: you go, you pay, you enjoy, you entertain, you leave.
The kid remembers having a good time with family, unless of course one family member is a raging sourpuss looking for ways to caterwaul. Then they remember that.

We've been scammed.

Hey, I've got an idea. Take your kid to some national parks or camping in the mountains or kayaking or something.
You don't want your privacy intruded on? Don't go to Disneyland.

(1,941 posts)Then again, you are at Disney. I loved it as a kid but it really has changed. It's a people trap operated by a mouse. Fuck what those fuckers have done to the fucking place.
My advice: don't do theme parks. It turns your kids into little grasping commercialized monsters. Break the cycle of addiction by never letting them get hooked.

Anyway, we did it too, years ago. Once was more than enough. Try to enjoy.

(53,410 posts)I don't blame you for being angry. I would be beside myself too if it happened to my kid. But I can't help thinking about the people who spend their entire lives going through that kind of treatment. Of parents who have to teach their kids to expect this.

(146,317 posts)There are reasons for it, mostly having to do with people letting other people use their passes. Also, they keep an eye on children, to keep them from being snatched.
I hope you were able to relax and enjoy the rest of your vacation and didn't let some minor annoyance ruin it. It's just not that big a deal, really.
BTW, there are video cameras everywhere at theme parks like that. Smile. They're taking your picture.
