Cell phone use caused fatal crash

Cell phone use caused fatal crash

JENNINGS COUNTY, Ind. (WDRB) -- Indiana State Police say cell phone use is to blame for a fatal crash on State Road 7.

Authorities say 24-year-old Steven C. Litzy of North Vernon was driving in a 1995 Honda Accord when his car left the road and flipped after hitting a drainage ditch.

Fire rescue crews had to extricate Litzy from the overturned car, and he was pronounced dead at Jennings County Hospital.

State police say Litzy may have been distracted because of using his cell phone.

They say it's a reminder of the deadly consequences of distracted driving.

who, failed to see the three lanes of cars in front of him stopped at a stoplight because he was using (or picking up) his cell phone. He flipped his car over the cars in front, totaling about four. While I was fortunate to be behind him in a turn lane and thus merely a witness, I have to say it was he who was most fortunate--emerging from the carnage without a scratch. This was largely before police made a concerted effort to identify if cell use was behind accidents, so I don't know if he was charged for that.

Really a horrendous wreck, even if no one was seriously hurt. Cell phones aren't the only distraction, certainly, but damn they can be deadly.

Being a bicycle rider, if I had a nickel for all the times I've nearly been splattered by ditwits yakking or worse, texting while driving, I could buy out the Koch brothers.

She hit me at 35 mph or faster and totaled both vehicles. She was lucky to survive and was taken by ambulance.

When I am behind the wheel, I am too busy to talk or do anything else. I am driving my car and yours too in a sense that I must anticipate what you are going to do. Then there are all the other things that can happen such as animals running out in front of you and those pesky curves in roads, they will sneak up on you quickly.

I love to drive, but I take it seriously too.
