(6,960 posts)That clip is an example of why I liked the old Art Bell Coast-to-Coast show so much.
Listening to those kinds of stories at 2:00 in the morning was great fun.
Art interviews 'Bugs" from Texas (where else) who shot two Big Foot ... you would be tempted to believe that this was all made-up. But, undoubtedly, Bugs was real and shot at something back in December 1976.

(13,553 posts)but he's a hell of an entertainer and has the voice to evoke that spooky feeling you get when sitting around a campfire late at night telling stories to one another.
I always thought Noory was a poor replacement and it turns out he's also a rw tool.

(5,281 posts)very political. He wrote a book about the coming superstorms and entertains all kinds of conspiracy stuff (except 9-11)--so he is an independent libertarian. It will be interesting to hear him again.

(14,857 posts)and they'd discuss real science. Those were excellent. Michio Kaku comes to mind as one of my favorite guests on the show.
Bell's a damned good interviewer, and even when the guests were nutcases and the topics were far-out, crazy, and utterly unbelievable, the shows were still entertaining and interesting to listen to.

(6,960 posts)Except --- when he interviewed people like Michio Kaku.
Art respected science.
But when it came to Big Foot and angels and even UFOs, you always had a feeling from his voice that there was a skeptic in there somewhere.
And that was the charm of his program -- it was at its heart radio entertainment and that is how Bell treated it most of the time. I repeat: Art Bell is one of the most skillful radio broadcasters of our time ... I 'm talking about his voice abilities, his timing, his interviewing capabilities, etc.
If you understood the 'deal' of the Art Bell show then it was a constant source of delight ... I still remember original broadcasts of the Mel's Hole schtick and the 'Screams from Hell' audio.
Noory on the other hand is a right-wing supernaturalist Roman Catholic ... he is as thin as an onion skin.
And a terrible interviewer at that. But Noory is a relentless self-promoter and with Clear Channel's backing he has done well for himself at the same time basically wrecking the entrancing qualities that Coast-to-Coast once had.

(14,857 posts)Noory's idiotic interview questions are annoying, but mostly his show is just plain boring. Punnit is actively obnoxious to listen to. So, I don't.

(16,191 posts)I couldn't count the number of late nights I've spent writing code with Art Bell on the radio in the background. 80% of the show was pseudoscience bullshit, but it was entertaining pseudoscience bullshit, and it was always fun trying to tell whether Art was simply being nice to his guests, or whether he actually believed what they were saying (my guess is that he thought that most of them were as batshit crazy as we did).

(9,841 posts)And I know what you mean about Art straddling the line between belief and disbelief, it actually encouraged tolerance, rare for talk radio!

(51,666 posts)I always used to be able to tell when he was skeptical of his guests (he had some real loons on C2C). I also loved how he did such a great job with the legitimate ones.

Yes, I was and remain a gigantic fan. I even once looked for his house in Parrump, Nevada, when I was on a road trip to the Mojave desert.
Just to see it you understand. Never did find it.
