Two children attacked by pit bull in Clinton

Two children attacked by pit bull in Clinton (MD)

Two boys are recovering from injuries Monday in Clinton after they were attacked by a pit bull, the owner of which was arrested.

Police say a 6-year-old and the child's 13-year-old cousin, Jovon Morton, were both attacked just after 5 p.m. Monday in the 11600 block of Cosca Park Drive by the pit bull. They both suffered bite wounds to their faces and arms, after which a teenage girl that was with the dog took off with the animal.

On Tuesday, Prince George's County Police located and arrested the dog's owner, Drew Byron Street, for violating the county's pit bull ban.

...

“He jumped and bit me right on my lip,” Jovan says.

The attack took place Monday evening as he watched his 6-year-old cousin on a play ground behind their grandma's house.

A woman walked by with this pit bull. It was not on a leash. The little boy was scared and ran but the dog took off after him clawing and biting. It even yanked his little shoe off.

Why was that dog not on a leash? I had a pit bull at one time and even though he was a sweet dog, he was always on a leash when I walked him. If the county has a pit bull ban, why did the woman even own one? A lot of questions to be answered.

I have him on a leash at all times when I have him outside. He is a great dog and very gentle with my 3 small children, but i would rather not take the chance. Any animal can turn in a second, even unprovoked, so it is ALWAYS better to be safe than sorry.

I know very well, as my pit almost attacked a small boy. Anything that is at eye level with them is considered prey. My dog was very large at 93 pounds, so this little boy was at eye level. Fortunately, the little boy was OK. That is why I always never allowed him around children. He was perfectly OK with adults.

but I put her on a leash just to take her outside to our fenced in back yard and put her on the tie out.

She's obsessed with chipmunks, squirrels, possums and raccoons and will jump the fence to chase one if not on her tie out.

And even though she is a totally submissive dog, I put her in my room and close the door if there are small children over.

unless they are at a dog park, at doggie daycare or in the backyard.

They can escape, and the big one has on occasion, but a few of the neighbors know him and can walk up and get him under control no matter how crazy he is acting (we will bark at folks - fancies himself a guard dog). Any dog can be a menace - doesn't need to be a pitt bull - and that is why leashes really are a good idea unless you are out on a farm somewhere (even then you want fences because dogs can get hit by cars).
