Walkers warned after cow kills hiker in Pyrenees

Walkers warned after cow kills hiker in Pyrenees

Hikers in France have been warned about the dangers of herds of cattle after an 85-year-old walker was killed in the Pyrenees when a cow charged at him. Four others, including two children, were left injured.

Authorities in France have been forced to issue reminders that “cattle are not domestic animals” after a hiker was killed when his walking party was charged by a cow.

The fatal incident occurred on a path heading to the summit of the 1,580 peak Col d’Azet in the Hautes-Pyrénées region on Tuesday afternoon.

According to reports the group of walkers passed close by a herd of cows, near the village of Azet. One of the cows, who was accompanied by her calf, suddenly charged from the herd toward the elderly hiker and knocked him to the ground.

“The cows came down from the higher pastures crossed the path of the walkers and charged into the group and into this man, who was knocked to the ground,” Major Pascal Sancho, from the mountain rescue centre at nearby Saint-Lary, told France’s RTL radio.

But still enjoyed the story. At least I can contribute a small slice of farm life lore: I used to have cousins whose family had a typical farm, and one of our daily chores was to bring the bull in from the pasture. The way we did it showed near-fatal genius. We'd unlock and hold open the door to his pen when we saw him far enough away in the pasture. Of course he'd charge at us, but the second he was in the pen, one or two of us would slam the gate shut on him and lock it fast. The one or two who'd stayed inside the pen to draw him in had only seconds to slip through the rails to safety. I don't think it ever occurred to any of us that we were courting death. It was just country entertainment and whoever stood in the pen as bait got treated royally indeed by the others.

We knew it was dangerous; that's what made it fun. But it never occurred to us that a tragedy could happen. Our timing could've been off one day, or somebody could've slipped and fell, etc. We were just scared enough to enjoy it, not wise enough to know better. We thought taunting the bull to make him charge where we wanted him to go, and then getting away with it was the best fun in the world.

walking in a national park in Great Britain: the path cut through a farm. A cow had a new-born calf, and was very protective of it: if anyone came remotely near she would lower her horns. I gave her a very wide berth.

They may not be completely wild animals, but they do have their opinions and they outway me. Plus, they have pointy things on their heads.
