(55,894 posts)Running on nationalist and often racist platforms, far right parties have gone from the streets into government, enjoying renewed popularity on local and national levels throughout Europe. In eastern Germany, the far-right NPD party has a foothold at state and local levels.

(45,851 posts)Good thing we don't have any right wing nationalists in the USA, at least that's one problem Germany has that the US doesn't.

(10,362 posts)I'm starting to lose any feeling I had for this country. The situation fills me with despair, looking around at my fellow Americans making embarrassing excuses for their favorite politicians. The whole charade makes one wonder if there is any point.
You're not alone. The best I can do is go for a bike or hike to focus on some of the good things that still exist. Looking around in the news and even DU can leave one a lot to despair about. Thanks for your honesty.

(16,184 posts)At least we don't kill whistleblowers. I mean, sure, we jail them indefinitely, torture them, and threaten them with execution, or at the very least, threaten them with outrageous jail terms if they expose corporate misdoings, but we don't kill them!
I would think we would hold ourselves to the standard of "not doing anything of those things" to our whistleblowers, being the land of the free and after voting in an administration apparently committed to accountability and transparency, but if the best we can do is "at least we don't kill them," then mission accomplished.

No we don't. And your point is hyperbole. We've had this discussion before: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023386518#post17

(16,184 posts)Whistleblowers shouldn't be getting punished at all. We do punish them. Russia also punishes them, but much more brutally.
But still, my point remains, we shouldn't be doing it at all, not just giving ourselves a pat on the back for at least not killing them.

...utter drivel. Murder isn't punishment, it's murder.
Blake, Binney, Tamm, none of them are in jail.
NuclearDem
(16,184 posts)And while your list is incredible, Bradley Manning is facing a life sentence, Ellsberg and Russo narrowly escaped the same, John Kiriakou is in jail, and Jeffrey Sterling has been indicted. And none of the assholes they blew the whistle on have even so much as been slapped on the wrist.
