Regional differences in abortion attitudes

Opposition to legal abortion is highest in parts of the South – including Texas, which recently passed sweeping new abortion restrictions. The South Central region is the only one in which opposition to legal abortion has significantly increased since the mid-1990s. By contrast, support for legal abortion remains highest in New England – and the gap between New England and South Central states has widened considerably over the past two decades.

No surprise there...

What jumps out at me is that there is a ten point difference between South Atlantic and South Central, and a six point gap between Great Lakes and Midwest. These subdivisions of regions usually lumped together as "South" and "Midwest" give a more refined picture that suggests that the more urbanized areas generally are far more liberal on abortion. The Great Lakes and South Atlantic states are far more urban than the South Central and what this survey calls "Midwest."Seeing this pattern, I speculate that if we could break down states by region the same pattern would occur. Southern Ohio more conservative than northern, central and southern Georgia more conservative than northern, etc.
