Texas Lawmakers Are ‘Watching Porn On iPads And On State-Owned Computers’ Says Reporter
In a just-published extensive exposé, a writer for a monthly Texas nonprofit nonpartisan magazine says she spent 140 days covering the Texas State Legislature’s 2013 session, and found it rife with uncloaked sexism and misogyny. Comments about women’s appearance, breasts, rampant condescension, and even one lawmaker who has trouble hearing “women’s voices.”
“Misogyny, as I had come to learn, is rampant in the Texas Capitol,” Olivia Messer writes in “The Texas Legislature’s Sexist Little Secret” at the Texas Observer:
Or, as Houston Republican Joan Huffman put it, “It’s probably the last of the good ol’ boys clubs.”
“Within weeks, I’d already heard a few horrifying stories,” Messer says. ”Like the time a former Observer staffer, on her first day in the Capitol, was invited by a state senator back to his office for personal ‘tutoring.’ Or, last session, when Rep. Mike ‘Tuffy’ Hamilton interrupted Marisa Marquez during a House floor debate to ask if her breasts were real or fake.”
“Young lady, would you please tell us why your mountains are better than any of our mountains, and are they man-made or are they real mountains?”
But Messer details plenty of personal stories as well.
