In a just-published extensive exposé, a writer for a monthly Texas nonprofit nonpartisan magazine says she spent 140 days covering the Texas State Legislatures 2013 session, and found it rife with uncloaked sexism and misogyny. Comments about womens appearance, breasts, rampant condescension, and even one lawmaker who has trouble hearing womens voices.
Misogyny, as I had come to learn, is rampant in the Texas Capitol, Olivia Messer writes in The Texas Legislatures Sexist Little Secret at the Texas Observer:
Or, as Houston Republican Joan Huffman put it, Its probably the last of the good ol boys clubs.
Within weeks, Id already heard a few horrifying stories, Messer says. Like the time a former Observer staffer, on her first day in the Capitol, was invited by a state senator back to his office for personal tutoring. Or, last session, when Rep. Mike Tuffy Hamilton interrupted Marisa Marquez during a House floor debate to ask if her breasts were real or fake.
Young lady, would you please tell us why your mountains are better than any of our mountains, and are they man-made or are they real mountains?
But Messer details plenty of personal stories as well.
