The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) says it is concerned by the approval by Uruguayan MPs of a bill which would legalise marijuana.
The INCB says the law would "be in complete contravention to the provisions of the international drug treaties to which Uruguay is party".
Under the new law, the state would assume control of growing and selling cannabis to registered users.
The Uruguayan government argues that by bringing the sale of cannabis under state control, it will remove profits from drug dealers and divert users from harder drugs.
The supporters of the measure argued that the fight against drugs and drug trafficking had failed, and the country needed "new alternatives".

(12,081 posts)and UN treaties the corporations have backing them, people have always and will always smoke marijuana. In fact, once the corporations do come around to approving of it so that they can own the market I'm not sure they'll be able to stop it then either. Home grown marijuana has always been an organic part of the culture of marijuana smoking. People have always grown their own and will always grow their own. Whether corporations buy governments and whether those governments put people in jail, it just doesn't matter. People will still continue to do it. This is one issue corporations will not win.

(2,424 posts)Perhaps rightfully so.
But I do retire in five years and I plan to partake. I believe it will be wonderful for mitigating the pain from my back issues.
I intend to defy the federal government. As a long time contributer to society, a lifetime taxpayer, a person that has never violated the law (except as a young adult smoking weed), a professional that has helped mitigate great danger to our environment, I will defy them.
I really look forward to retirement. Leave the old man alone.
Edit: I guess I am way off topic here. Go Southern Hemisphere!
