US Senators Push Forward Resolution On Venezuela

EL UNIVERSAL
Friday August 02, 2013 05:04 PM
A US bipartisan group comprised by seven Senators submitted Thursday a draft resolution rejecting any kind of intimidation by the Venezuelan government against dissenters, and termed "inexcusable violence" the events taking place inside the Venezuelan Parliament in April.

In the document, the group requested the Organization of American States (OAS) an in-depth report on the number of irregularities emerging upon the presidential election held in Venezuela on April 14.

The debate is expected to be held after the mid-year break of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. If the committee approves the document, it will be voted in the Senate.

Democrat Senator for New Jersey Bob Menéndez, the chair of the committee, and one of the seven senators endorsing the draft resolution, said Nicolás Maduro's government must "admit the opposition's legitimacy and concerns. It should also refrain from adopting violent and intimidating tactics, and commit to work under the rule of law."
