It's amazing how open strangers will be with their homophobia if they think you're straight.
I am a very unassuming individual for the most part. Not that I have anything against flamboyant characters. For better or worse, it's simply not part of my personality. I will publicly identify as bisexual if asked and I will call you out on your shit if you're harassing someone or mocking others.
With that being said, some of the most horrifically homophobic insults I've ever heard are "gifted" to me when people perceive me to be a heterosexual, homophobic ally. Just as some of the most horrifically racist rhetoric I've heard has been gifted to me when people assume that my whiteness means I'm on "their" side.
This grants me a fairly unique perspective in life. A unique, privileged (although some might argue repressed) perspective. I can witness, first hand, bigotry unchained and unfiltered.
From this experience, I can come to a fairly firm conclusion towards those who are opponents of LGBTQ rights.
Their hatred is filled with more vitriol than any public pronouncement would lead you to believe. They are dumber than most of us are able to identify. They are more self loathing than almost any gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual or queer individual they attempt to attack. They are afraid of the true brutality of their beliefs in a way much grander than a simple fear of being "outed." That to even pronounce the hatred, to make literal the emotions that until voiced are just charlie horses in the deepest part of their lizard brains, is to disqualify their position from anything pertaining to logic or humanity.
This is the level of disgustingness they carry. The only way to maintain it publicly is to hide it from the ones they hate. When they communicate with their bigoted brothers and sisters, the lack of criticism amounts to a lack of observation. Hatred flows through these groups untethered. It's like observing the collapse of a wave. Without questioning, this hatred floats in some unattainable ether as nothing more than potential. To them, no pain is felt and no damage is seen. But the second they are confronted with reality BAM the waves collapse into the only things they could ever truly be...
