Some photos from today's Moral Monday in NC

I took these at the "Mountain Moral Monday" held in Asheville NC. Rising up against the GOP cruelty, greed, fascism and lies. It was an incredible turnout and Reverend Barber had many in tears with the power and passion of his words. It was the first Moral Monday held outside of Raleigh.

Thousands At Mountain Moral Monday

Aug 5, 2013

Thousands of people crowd Pack Square Park for the Mountain Moral Monday protest.

The NAACP and other liberal groups planned the demonstration infront of the Buncombe County Courthouse in Asheville.

The protests went on for 13 weeks in Raleigh at the Legislative Building with nearly 1,000 arrests.

Organizers wanted to point out what they said were the Republican-majority Legislature and governor rolling back progress in education, social and economic equality and assuring all qualified people have the right to vote.

North Carolina NAACP President the Rev. William Barber was at the Asheville protests and said he plans to take the Moral Monday protests to all 13 of North Carolina's congressional districts.

According to this site it was around 5,000

Asheville police Sgt. Dave Romick estimated well more than 5,000 people attended the rally, which crowded Roger McGuire Green in Pack Square Park in front of City Hall.

He and the NC NAACP have worked so hard on corralling and inspiring everybody who's been involved.
Rev Barber rocks. He is for real. I am glad to see all the clergy and religious community taking part in this--taking a real stand. It is necessary.

The most you can hope for is a third person (who's ignorant) standing by.

Think about it. Unless someone has spent the last 30 years on Gilligan's Island they have already heard all the crap.

Then again, I was at a party during Bush and someone asked, "You know politics, right?" and then asked me if Bush was a Republican or a Democrat....

This is a wonderful crowd that will only keep growing. North Carolina is such a gorgeous state. My older son's godparents lived in Raleigh, and one Thanksgiving we drove down from Chicago where I tasted my first barbecued turkey. Lots of friendly folks there to be sure.

Fantastic photos - thanks for posting this.
