My father flew low level napalm attacks against Japan

In his B-29 out of Tianan in 45 and won the distinguished flying cross..

More destructive than the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the fire bombings of 45 destroyed more than 100 square miles of inhabited land, razed more than two million buildings, killed 500,000 people and left 13 million people homeless.

He recall smelling burning human flesh during the conflagration. He didn't like to talk about the war I only got him to talk when I was in my forties.

He later worked on the 1964 nuclear test ban treaty for the Joint Chiefs. He admired Robert Oppenheimer and hated Curtis Lemay.

He saw other ships in the fleet get hit. His did not.
