The cop took down the name of the hospital and her fathers name, then let Ms Williams go, telling her to drive safely.
However, when he called the hospital to check her story, staff told him the man wasnt a patient. An online search uncovered his obit on a funeral home website, showing he had died in 2008.
"I was upset," said Mr Cummings. "For someone to lie about their deceased father just to get out of a speeding ticket was pretty upsetting to me as a person, he told ABC News.

This cop went way too far in googling this woman and her father. Outrageous! "Police state" indeed!

Message from law enforcement
"We can do it (make up stories) but you can not."
And they (law enforcement) wonder why people have so much anger towards them.

At least those who get caught lying have anger... justified or not.

(9,974 posts)Her license was under suspension, which makes her a double liar, pretty likely a pathalogical liar. Don't like 'em.......

(1,451 posts)The time to address any problems with her license was during the stop. He crossed the line when he decided to call the hospital and investigate her online until he found something to charge her with. On top of that, he had the audacity to show up at her door asking more questions? Who the hell does he think he is? He's a street cop, not a detective on CSI!

(21,506 posts)So if your dad was dying in the hospital and you got pulled over you would prefer if they arrested you on the spot rather than let you go see your dad?
I would think that would be much more of a police state than this.
I'll take the cop with the compassion to let me go see my dad every time. If my story doesnt check out then i deserve what i get at that point.
I Recently had a child fall out of second story window and I rushed him to the hospital. all I kept thinking on the way was that if a cop tries to stop me I am not stopping. Mostly because I didnt think I would run into a cop like the one in this story.

(63,169 posts)Would he be required to let her go because he didn't arrest her at the time of the traffic stop?

(6,324 posts)A street cop is every bit as empowered to do further investigation into a crime as anyone else.
He could have written her on the spot, but have her the benefit of a doubt, followed up on the stop, found she lied, and acted accordingly.

(15,189 posts)My father would have proud had I done that. Police state indeed.

Poor baby was upset.
What a dick.

(63,169 posts)The cop performed due diligence and caught her in her lie. The search that he performed is no more creepy than a stoplight camera tracking you down by your license plate to mail you a ticket.
I have no problem with what the cop did in this case.

(18,101 posts)Then, he checked her story out. That seems more than fair. When he showed her the obituary, she lied again. Fuck her.

(3,724 posts)Speeding with an invalid registration and then lying about your dead father when getting caught - this one is not too bright, is she? I will admit that the cop looking her up later is a bit creepy, though.

(3,660 posts)I'm not saying I would've arrested her necessarily, but I damn sure would given her the original ticket. People are quick to attack cops for lying, so people need to be honest with their dealings with cops as well.

(26,595 posts)gloating to her friends about how she fooled a traffic cop. I hope the cop isn't more cynical next time he stops a person who is really racing to an emergency, but I have no problem at all with him checking up.
And while I'm biased due to personal experience, and this is a purely Fristian analysis, a significant and well-publicized slap-down may be good for her. People that get in the habit of lying glibly through life do a lot of damage (to themselves as well as others)...

(14,732 posts)the next person legitimately speeding because of an emergency is going to get nailed by this cop - no excuses, no understanding, no anything. Along with all his buddies who heard the story. I'm personally pleased that she got what was coming to her. Her type of stupidity only hurts other people.

(1,451 posts)Forget the woman's actions, the point here is that a cop googled a citizen after a traffic stop. What if he found that she was telling the truth about her dad, but he also found a post she made on a forum about doing drugs? Would he be justified in returning to arrest her on drug charges?

(114,904 posts)and who was driving in violation of the law to begin with. There is nothing wrong with what the cop did and no could possibly be dumb enough to think this was evidence of a police state.

(6,324 posts)You deserve the jail time just for being stupid.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with an officer doing investigative work. In fact it is a good thing. He had a chance to write the ticket at the stop. He found there might be a case for leniency so he held off, did some good old fashioned detective work, determined the tickets were in fact justified, and issued them.

(7,720 posts)on drug charges, even if there was a photo of her smoking crack. That is not enough evidence to prosecute. It is in the public domain however, so if the cop found further evidence of illegal drug use, then the internet evidence would come into play.
Are you unaware that police investigate people suspected of breaking laws?

he checked out my story and then returned saying he would pray for us and that i should drive safely
