Two "critically endangered" Sumatran Tiger Cubs Born At National Zoo

Two rare Sumatran tiger cubs were born at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo on Monday, the zoo announced Thursday.

Sumatran tigers are listed as critically endangered, the zoo said. Only 400 to 500 exist in the wild. And there are only 65 living in accredited zoos in North America.

This is the first litter for the zoo’s female Sumatran tiger, Damai. The cubs were sired by the zoo’s male Sumatran tiger, Kavi.

The cubs will not be exhibited publicly for several months. They must undergo a series of health exams and get vaccinations, the zoo said in a statement.

But tiger fans may be able to spot the cubs on the zoo’s live webcams.
