(25,406 posts)Every Catholic church should have free condom machines. If life begins at conception, and a condom prevents conception, what is the problem?
Oh, and they will also prevent people from suffering and dying due to STDs. Surely God has no issue with that?

(10,602 posts)The Catholic Church teaches that you cannot interfere with sperm or egg in any fashion either artificially, chemically or mechanically. The fundies largely buy into that idea.
The Church unofficially says you cannot have sex unless you intend to get pregnant. In the most extreme view you cannot have sex unless you are ovulating. When that can be determined down to the minute I am sure the Catholic Church will forbid sex until the second of ovulation.
The Church teaches you have to have ALL THE CHILDREN you are capable of.

(1,799 posts)Catholics are big in the pro-life movement and their religion teaches that any interference in conception is wrong.
I've known people who used the rhythm method ie not having sex when likely to conceive. They have many children.

(10,602 posts)I realized at 23 that I could not remain mentally sound and emotionally healthy believing that SHIT and that is what it is. the whole "mackeral snapping" schtick is that you have to treat yourself badly, deny yourself every comfort in preparation for the "afterlife" in heaven. So you have to be down on yourself, be neurotic and fearful every single second.
It is all bullshit made up by some neurotic bunch of celibate monks over 1000 years ago.

(15,189 posts)With their 2nd Amendment rights. Ask Dr. Tiller, Oh wait...
If we give the kiddies condoms, then we condone their sexual activities.
Besides, my teenage children don't know about sex, and don't do it.
They know God and Jesus, and know they made a promise to us they wouldn't have sex. Besides, why should we pay for some whores contraception? Rush is right.
Here's the latest town hall meeting.

(86,308 posts)scared of women who have the power to bear children so, of course, they must be punished for having that power. Aside from that, it is convenient to control them and keep them from having any other power, not counting the power to entice men sexually because, as we all know, men can't be expected to control themselves or their sex drive...

(19,288 posts)It is control and oppression. Pleasure is sinful in the eyes of the church. It can be addictive even. Physical enjoyment is down on the low rung of a spiritual agenda.
Sometimes with enough deprivation of the more base instincts it enlightens the mind and causes emotional equanimity, where you no longer feel sad about not having sex. You can boost up to the spiritual plane and start thriving in that Christ-like unconditional love and acceptance. I think that priests and nuns are supposed to pray until it passes. And live in some spiritual dreamworld of purity and saintly-ness.
So 'decent' girls and women are supposed to ignore the strong drive to kiss, cuddle, snuggle, and find physical comfort and pleasure in coitus.
I think the churches just expect if you are elevated enough you can simply surpass you desire and expectations and be like Buddha of Jesus.

(1,289 posts)Growing up and living in rural Oklahoma all my life, I have been surrounded by these people. I've developed a theory based on my observations. It's because they're miserable. The people I know that rail against abortion are the same people that piss and moan to have the local bar shut down. They're the same people that had a fit when we tried to build some small skate parks for the kids is some the rural communities around here. They're the same people that called the county deputies out when I had a barn party and brought my best friend's band down out of Tulsa and iced down some kegs, even though they were way too far away to have been bothered by it, they knew it was going on and just HAD to stop it.
In short, they are people who lead lives of misery and monotony in sackcloth and ashes and gawd forbid somebody, somewhere is actually having a good time. If they find out somebody might actually be having some fun, they will do everything they can to try and fuck it up. I don't believe for a minute that the majority of these people really give a damn about the unborn "babies" they are supposedly trying to protect. They are just miserable people trying to make everybody else miserable and they believe they have a righteous reason that gives them a "big stick" to use.

(46,179 posts)That's the bottom line.
It's the foundation underneath every other argument.
Some of those arguments are about whether birth control prevents conception, or prevents implantation after conception. They'll argue the details until the second coming or human extinction, because it keeps that bottom line under the surface.

(1,494 posts)1) Not all contraception is equal. They classify some as the same thing as abortion.
2) Promoting contraception is the same thing as promoting immoral behavior, specifically to the young.
3) Sex for pleasure alone does not jive with their interpretations of the bible/koran... etc.
I'm sure there's more, but these are the main three. Personally, I think most of this is a bunch of hogwash (I say most only because there are forms of contraception that I dislike.. not because I agree with ANY of their arguments).
