How disliked is GOP kingpin Mitch “the turtle” McConnell? Even his campaign manager can’t stand him, it seems. According to a recorded phone conversation, Jesse Benton is only working for McConnell in order to help Rand Paul with a possible presidential bid in 2016.
As HuffPo reports:
“Between you and me, I’m sorta holdin’ my nose for two years, cause what we’re doin’ here is gonna be a big benefit to Rand in 2016, so that’s the long vision,” Benton reportedly said, apparently referring to a possible presidential run by Paul.
According to the Economic Policy Journal, the recorded conversation took place between Benton and Dennis Fusaro of the Reformed Theological Seminary on Jan. 9, 2013. Fusaro confirmed to the Weekly Standard that he made and later released the recording.
Benton’s comment about McConnell underscores the tension between the Senate majority leader and the tea party as he runs for reelection.
Poor Mitch, of all the unpopular neocons on Congress, he must be near the top of the list. It must be hard for Benton to publicly defend the Senate Minority leader’s position on Obamacare, while harboring such intense negative feelings about him personally.
“Senator McConnell will always do what he thinks is right for both Kentucky and the nation,” said McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton. “He is a man of principle who doesn’t governs based on political whims and never backs down to pressure from special interest.”
Sure sounds like Benton is firmly behind his man McConnell, doesn’t it? Until we learn of his covert comments to Fusaro. Of course, Benton is not too happy about the secret recordings:
“It is truly sick that someone would record a private phone conversation I had out of kindness and use it to try to hurt me,” Benton said in a statement released by the McConnell campaign Thursday. “I believe in Senator McConnell and am 100 percent committed to his re-election. Being selected to lead his campaign is one of the great honors of my life and I look forward to victory in November of 2014.”
It is sick, for sure. The incestuous relations between these twisted Neocons are symptomatic of the larger disease that has infested the Grand Old Party. When unchecked capitalism meets extreme right-wing Christian conservationism, this is the chromosomal-challenged offspring.
