Werner Herzog directs a documentary about...texting while driving.

Well worth a watch!

Bavarian polymath Werner Herzog's just-released film, From One Second to the Next (below), is 35 minutes of excruciating testimonials by people on the spectrum from affected to devastated by texting and driving. It's part of a campaign by AT&T to raise awareness. Expect it to do that.

Herzog did address the motive of the project in the context of the creeping intrusion of marketing in creative media. He told the Associated Press, "This has nothing to do with consumerism or being part of advertising products. This whole campaign is, rather, dissuading you from excessive use of a product."

Herzog explains, "I'm not a participant of texting and driving — or texting at all — but I see there's something going on in civilization which is coming with great vehemence at us."

What a fascinating statement. "Woyzeck" was one of the first foreign films I ever watched. What an introduction! Will definitely watch this documentary... thanks for sharing.

It's addictive and a lot of teens are addicted to the instant gratification in short bursts. Can't be out of touch with friends.

"Hey, you there?"
"Yeah, I'm here."

The intellectual stimulation, the burgeoning job skills. Don't know who learns less--the kid who comes to school drunk or the kid who sits and texts.

And it's as disruptive to driving as being drunk is. But you can't tell teenagers that. Heck, they often don't get that drunk driving is dangerous.

I first started texting about 10 years ago when I was trying to meet a friend at a concert. Trying to call her would have been useless as it was too loud to hear our phone ring or hear ourselves talk.

I'm also very anti talking while driving, as I was almost killed by a driver on a cell phone. She was not a teenager, but rather a late 30s mom picking her son up from preschool. Most of the people i see texting/talking while driving seem to fit into the soccer mom demographic rather than teens.

And if we are going to talk about dangerous drivers, we need to address the other end of the spectrum (elderly drivers).

I've watched half and will watch the other half later. Heartbreaking.

This is not the most important film he will have made in terms of its cinematic contribution, but it's the most important film he probably will have made if it saves someone's life, or saves someone from taking someone's life.

I don't know how you can watch this and ever text while driving again. What is so important that it can't wait at least until you pull over.

Lat week, this guy was drifting into my lane. Right before he hit me, I hit the brakes and honed the horn.
He was on the phone, of course.
Can't tell you how many people I see do this...

Even recent, massive train derailments are a result of the engineer playing with his phone.

Maybe they should put phone jammers inside cars that kick on when the cars are in motion.

So if you're in a vehicle going faster than a certain speed, it will not receive or send calls.

Here is one app - there seem to be others: http://www.drivesafemode.com/pages/features

I haven't watched it yet, but have yet to dislike anything Herzog has done. His music selections are somewhat distracting at times, but the subject matter is always treated with artistry and humanity.
