Neo-Nazis in NY vandalize statue of Jackie Robinson

Mark Reese: Vandalism to Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese statue shows there’s a long way to go despite progress After his statue shared with Jackie Robinson was desecrated, my father’s pessimism and Robinson’s optimism regarding race relations have me confident that, while the country is one generation closer to becoming truly one nation, we’ve got a way to go before we truly get along with each other.

When considering the mindset of such a person, someone who’d write racist epithets on a statue of a civil rights hero, you have to imagine they’re feeling a sense of accomplishment at the moment.

Rest assured. The country is one generation closer to becoming truly one nation.

And yet as I write this, I hear my father's pessimism echoing throughout. Were he alive today (he died Aug. 14, 1999), he might say in his folksy way, “We ain’t there yet.”
