I think it's more than a coincidence. First, all of the chatter has been re: foreign threats. The arguments that it's necessary to spy on everybody are that it's not us but foreigners that are being spied on. Any intercepts perceived or real only bolster the push to erode our privacy.

(26,355 posts)Hell, there have been lots of previous occasions where they heard "chatter", and got actual attacks, but then they didn't bother to close
embassies.
Now, they're in maximum freak-out mode - gotta show the rubes there's a Threat!
