The People's Garden (Greeley Occupy with Al Frente de Lucha)
The garden is growing like crazy! The storm last week spared us any damage, and provided great support for our plants. We've been harvesting on Mondays and this past Thursday Mil took over an additional harvest of 2 five gallon buckets of vegetables to the Rodarte Center for the kids and adults to share.
Additionally, an elderly woman came to the center in need and left with 2 grocery bags of produce. This has been one of our goals: support the community surrounding the garden with food from the garden. Mutual aid and support.
No referrals. No qualifying. No begging.
No pesticides. No GMOs.
If you haven't seen the garden lately, it is a good time to come by and check out the changes. The garden is beautiful.

This garden began with a vacant lot. Members of Occupy began the work of clearing the space and preparing the ground. Through the assistance of Al Frente de Lucha and the adjacent Rodarte Center a number of neighborhood kids received lessons about growing food and some practical experience in doing so. It has been a remarkable success. And community enthusiasm for the project continues to grow. (For the record, I helped with the garden by keeping my notoriously "black thumbs" far away from it.)
Our Occupiers remain involved in a number of other community activities, not least of which is our ongoing battle against fracking. The People's Garden project provides Occupy and the rest of the community with a positive counterpoint to the destruction brought by all the fracking.
Stay tuned.
