He certain isn't a small d democrat and is taking Russia in a authoritarian direction. I feel sorry for the Russian people.

1. Russia isn't a Democracy--and Putin's excesses and course (despite Bush's* star-gazed belief in him)

are accepted fact to most. But, he doesn't really need the US. We have dug ourselves (largely from the Bushies* misdeeds) into a hole of collective weakness on this and many fronts.

Don't feel too sorry for his people. His tactics may be antidemocratic, but he definitely has the consent of the people to govern.
