Shameful Missouri State Fair stunt smears Obama

The taxpayer-supported Missouri State Fair got a lot of negative publicity Sunday following a report of a shameful stunt that occurred Saturday night in Sedalia.

The story by an eyewitness, Perry Beam, is posted to Daily Kos and Show Me Progress.

Fortunately, by late Sunday evening, The Star reported that many top officials — from Gov. Jay Nixon to leading Republicans — were denouncing the incident.

Basically, a clown wearing a mask of President Barack Obama came out during the bull riding event at the fair. The crowd was asked if it wanted to see Obama “run down by a bull.” (UPDATE: 6:55 p.m.: Here are two short videos of part of the incident: “We’re going to smoke Obama, man,” says announcer.)

And the rodeo announcer is a school superintendent!

Boonville school superintendent was announcer during controversial rodeo performance
by Eli Yokley • August 11, 2013

– Boonville School Superintendent Mark Ficken, president of the Missouri Cowboy Rodeo Association, was the rodeo announcer during a controversial performance at the Missouri State Fair Saturday night, the association’s director Kim Spurgin confirmed to PoliticMo on Sunday.

According to an account published on the Democratic-leaning blog ShowMeProgress.com, an announcer asked “if anyone would like to see Obama,” portrayed by a masked clown, “run down by a bull.” The crowd reportedly cheered, until the “bull came close enough to him that he had to move.” According to the account, at that point the clown “jumped up and ran away to the delight of the onlookers hooting and hollering from the stands.”

The performance set off a firestorm on social media on Sunday, and Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, a Republican, and U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, both called on people to be “held accountable” for the performance.

Attempts to contact Ficken on Sunday were unsuccessful.

Obviously he would be able to lift his broken body and fix himself. He does need any gubmint assistance or healthcare.

"hoopin' and hollerin' in agreement"

that comment is a disgusting smear.

SHAME ON YOU.

You owe duers an apology.

Not that I'm holding my breath. People who make scurrilous, false accusations with NOTHING to back them up and with no other intent but to falsely slime others, aren't known for admitting what they are doing or apologizing for it.

Hatred though, that's a serious accusation. I am very disappointed in some of what the current Administration has done but that disappointment hasn't turned me into a vindictive redneck who gets a kick out of imagining somebody gored by a raging animal. Shame on *you* for assuming everybody is as angry as you clearly are.

and Kinder both said "this is not who we are". In the comments section, someone remarked in response: "this is exactly who we are". The most disturbing thing about this is that onlookers were rabidly cheering it on.

As a kid, I was involved in a few of them.

I can remember the fans booing some of the cowboys just because they had hispanic sounding names.

I doubt if it's gotten much better since then.

However, they are smart enough to keep their mouths shut, well, if they raise stock they will.

The breeders of bucking bull stock are cliquish and fickle. The cabal at the top as anti Obama as I have seen. Speak out against them and you won't have access to the best genetics, you won't get your stock placed in local events let alone national events. Your stock won't win in futurity events no matter how well they buck or how rank they are. If you need to sell stock you will get packing house prices.

I'm surprised that something this flagrant happened at this level. The clown has probably pulled this routine hundreds of times at smaller venues.

BTW the photo appears to show a target dummy dressed as Obama, not a clown. It doesn't make it less despicable, but I point it out in the interest of accuracy.

Or maybe not, since that is a racial smear.

So no, not the same thing.
